X2, sounds like a bad wire.

Try swapping back one of your old wires... just on #5

Edit: typing at the same time...

If that is the problem I would take the wires back and get a new set.

I like MSD StreetFire Wires. They come with a tool to crimp the ends on, so you can cut them to the exact size you need. I get very good performance/longegevity with them. Money well spent. I get them from Summit Racing.

I'm just going to throw this out there. If your battery died from cranking a few times, could you have a bad battery? I've seen cases where a bad battery caused the engine to run poorly. You mentioned you got it to run smoother, but it seemed from your comments that it still was not 100% right. If you are still having rough idle or a rough acceleration, maybe you should get the battery tested.

I think im going to name my Jeep Lee Corso. Everytime I think ive fixed the issue it gives me the "Not so fast my friend!".

Went to AAP and they gave me a cable to replace the crap one(plus a couple extra). When leaving the store my check engine light came on so i went back just to check it out. The code was for cylinder 4 misfiring. Which seemed odd to me because #5 had the crap wire. So I replace both #4 and #5 wires.

It started up fine. Sounded good at idle. Sounded good at low speed on flat ground. But when id get on it it was really rough again and 'puttin' same thing going uphill. No power and 'puttin'. I didnt go though all the plugs since i thought id found the problem. I guess ill start there.

I will add that my wires are in the order with the starting position seen in Jonny Jeep's pic.

Better or worse than when you first started messing with it?

Go back to the advice the guys gave you before -- see if you can isolate it to a specific cylinder.

I can think of a lot of things that will cause an engine to misfire under load. Some fuel related, some ignition.
Bad gas, plugged fuel filter, stuck egr valve, faulty fuel pump, clogged injectors etc...
I usually try to eliminate the easy and cheap stuff first. Such as, check all your grounds. Spark plugs can't fire properly without the heads being grounded. The misfiring jumping around is indicative of a bad ground. Also too high of a resistance plug wires. (I only use premium wire sets) The cheapie ones just aren't worth the aggrevations.

I will admit I'm not quite up to speed on the TJ's yet, but the symptoms you describe could also be a failing ignition control module or a coil. Admittedly, I can diagnose CJs, and YJs in my sleep, but I'm so new to the TJ world that I'm not familiar with the 98 model enough to know the ignition systems from memory. Just trying to give you some ideas. Hope they help.

Pulled the plugs. I think two of the plugs have hairline cracks. Im goin to pick up a couple new ones along with a timing light and some throttle cleaner. Ive got a lil bit of gunk on the inside. Prob not a big deal but may as well clean it up.

Could this be the issue? I mayve been in BeastMode when doing the original tuneup and over tightened them(ill use my torque wrench this time). Or maybe when I was trying to get the crap wire onto the plug put too much stress on it?
