pop bang

I have a 2000 Wrangler that had a whining noise coming from the rear end. Was driving it yesterday and the whining got loader and then bang pop and nothing. I had to put it in 4-weel drive to get home. Luckily I was only 2 miles from home. I know it is something wrong in the rear end but what is the question. Please help!

Take the rear diff cover off and see what kind of pieces you have floating around in there...post pics too!

crawl under there and take a look. 90-1 says it's your rear diff. If you know what the hell your doing, then take the cover off and "ooh and ahh" at the carnage.

Time to re-gear!

Tow it to a shop and let them do it. If you are on here wondering what the noise was then you have no business opening the rear diff.

if theres metal shavings in the fluid something went wrong most likley. it could be an axle shaft if you have a D44(D35 the shaft would of slid out most likley) could be the carrier, gears, spider gears

I wish there were some good news here, but I'm afraid the rear diff is full of crumbs and chunks.

Just the way I figure, Why even crawl under it and mess with it when it's broke and you cant do anything with it. If he is was fully capable of rebuilding the rearend then by all means tear it down. But I would say that there are very few on here that have the know how to rebuild and set up a ring and pinion, and get it right. When you take it to the shop tell them you want to see them open it and get some pics for us. We like carnage.

Its a good time to go ahead and put in a locker while it's gotta be rebuilt any ways. And mabey even regear it. While they are in it they could do the front for not much more $$.
