plastic tailgate hinge covers?

Not really a technical question, but does anybody know where I can purchase a set of those plastic tailgate hinge covers? The new JK comes with them factory, but I have seen a few TJ's with them on both the street, and in magazines. I have not seen them for sale anywhere. Does anybody know if they are a Mopar accessory?

Are you sure they are covers? I thought they were the new late model TJ hinges and JK hinges.

If you're talking about the plastic covers like I have... they are definately covers, but if you don't have the newer style hinges they wont work. Personally, I'd rather have the older style hinges with no covers because these just trap mud/grime/salt/etc... and the hinges are ugly without the covers.

They are in fact plastic covers on top of the metal (aluminum i believe) hinges. They started putting them on TJ's in 06, the last year of TJ production. I think the easiest way to get them is to order them from your local dealer.

My '05 had them too... but they are definitely not the same old hinges. If you remove the covers you'll see they're more like a stamped steel rather than the thick cast metal the old hinges were made of.

BTW, the part numbers for the covers are 55395196AA for the body side, and 55395195AA for the tailgate side, in case you want to pick them up from your dealer. You'd need two of each for both hinges.

so the plastic covers will not fit onto my 2003 style hinges, i would actually have to buy new hinges as well? I think they look pretty good, although i am sure they trap dirt, etc. The paint on my factory hinges is starting to bubble, so i need to do something to fix this. So I should be able to order the 05-06 stamped metal hinges, and the plastic covers to go with them from Mopar and they would fit on my 03 TJ?

Personally, I would get aftermarket stainless steel hinges so you wont have to worry about rust again. They're available in powder coated black as well, in case you're not looking for the chrome look. Check 4wd.com or Quadratech.com.

Don't mean to hijack, but what rear bumper/tire carrier is that? It's nice.

04's have them also, or at least mine does.

The bumper above is a Jeeperman according to his spec's.

Actually, I own an 04' Unlimited and it has the black covers. Well it did, until I drove off with the gate open and the darn thing flew back until the hinge was hyper extended. Then the black covers disappeared. I didn't realize any of this happend for at least 2miles because my baby daughter was not in very good mood at the moment.

The plastic covered hinges will not fit earlier aluminum hinged tj's.

The newer tj's have recessed areas in the tub to clear the hinge.
