Plastic diff covers???

I have seen them in my local shop, but just thought they were for displays to show off the internals.

The guy at the shop says they are stronger than steel covers and that he wailed on it with a sledgehammer, and it barely scratched it.

Anyone actually tried one of these on a rock rig?

They may hold up to a sledgehammer but they won't hold up to the combination of a Jeep's weight high-centered on a sharp rock. Clear differential covers are for the street racers.

maybe better to try a pick axe on them to simulate some nice sharp rocks.

I will buy one when they put a bright blue fluorescent light inside to show off my Detroit Locker.

If Jerry, Stu, and half the offroading world runs them with no problems and someone gives me a pair, I'll consider it. Until then, I'll stick to steel. I'm not inclined to be a guinea pig.

Im sure they'll look great when your crusty diff fluid is plastered to the inside- you wont be able to see it anyway..

I'll stick to my homemade armored diff covers, thank you.

I do think it would be cool to somehow incorporate a viewing window in a steel diff cover. Even if it had to have a secondary armor piece to protect the window somehow. That way you could tell just visually the condition of your fluid (level). I've seen this on old furnace blower motors to indicate lubricating oil level...
Just a thought. That way the only vulnerable part on the diff would be like 1" diameter right where the fluid line would be.

I don't want a blue flourescent diff light, but I would take a red dome light that was bright enough to read by! That white is so obtrusive when driving at night in the middle of nowhere in the dark.

Maybe one with a HID light would work.

While being impressive, I think a 2 1/2 ton Jeep falling from a height of 6-12 inches is going to exert more PSI impact especially from a big knarly imoveable object like a rock - than the baddest BFH.

Always gotta ask yourself. Is this mod going to make my rig better?

Can't see it. (no pun intended)

So when it breaks I'll have to buy one of those expensive bulbs? Fat chance. I'll stick with my halogen-coated-in-translucent-blue-paint HID "look" backlit diff covers...IF you don't mind!
