pecking sounds while driving
not sure what it is..
its when im accelerating, a pecking noise gets faster as i go faster. the noise stops if i rev the engine with the clutch pushed in while moving, but when i go back in gear and give it gas, the noise keeps going. also, if im going uphill, up my driveway, it pecks pretty loud and slowly. it sounds like its right below the floor board, but its a bit hard to tell.

haha, thanks.. i've been asking around, and people are saying its my valves pecking. i just changed my oil and used some Lucas oil stabilizer, so we'll see how that goes. i dunno, hopefully its as simple as that.

actually, something else to add would be that you can feel the 'pecking' vibrations on my shifter knob. its not overwhelming, but you can feel it.

i had my problem diagnosed, and it ended up being a broken gear tooth. no fun. i might have to replace the whole transmission. |

Check the ujoint tomorrow. Did your transmission do anything other than the sound and stuff. I think mine might be a exhaust leak I hope.

it ran fine other than the sound and the slight vibration on the stick. it shifted well and everything felt normal. i thought i mightve had a crack in my exhaust somewhere cause thats what it sounded like while driving. of course, that was ruled out when the sound went away when pushing in the clutch.

My dad's 6-speed TJ started like that. It turned out it was the main bearing going in the transmission. When the bearing finally went (~300 miles) it took the rest of the trany with it. Thankfully it was just barley under warranty and they replaced the whole transmission.

Just reading up on this a bit. The stealership has now looked at it twice. I would diagnose it myself, but I was a sucker and bought the extended warranty. Surprisingly I actually have gotten my money out of it. First time in they replaced a u-joint in the front axle at the steering knuckle. They asked me if the warranty company knew I had lifted it. 4.5" RE superflex tom woods rear cv shaft and 35" tall tires. I told them that they warranty company would not cover any of the suspension, but the rest would be covered. I took it back to the dealer ship to have them tell me it was the front drive shaft and that the lift caused it to fail and charged me 50 bones for the diagnosis. I thought about this for a bit and realized it couldn't be because the front shaft is not under load when in 2wd. This happened when I noticed the noise disappeared when the clutch was pressed. Don't get me wrong. I love to wrench on the jeep, but if I can have somebody reliable diagnose and fix for free then I might as well do it. The techs at the stealership should not be licensed as all they know how to do is guess. Tomorrow I am taking it to a reliable mechanic with a dyno to try and pinpoint the noise. I will post what we find.
