Part-time VS Full-time 4WD light

Hey guys, I just bought a 2000 TJ. I took it off road for my first time yesterday. (my first Jeep) Anyway, when I put it in 4WD it says "part-time" on the dash. 4Low and 4High both say part time??? Is there something wrong...or what makes the "full-time" light glow?

Wranglers don't have a full-time 4x4 system even available as an option, they come with strictly a part-time system which is the more aggressive version usable strictly for offroad use. The Wrangler's dashboard used to also be used by the now-discontinued Cherokee which had an optionally available full-time 4x4 system not available on the Wrangler.

Well,
As far as I konw you'll never see the words "full-time". I never do.
On my GC I had both part and full-time lights...and there was a difference between the two..but not on a TJ.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

I've heard that the reason why the wranglers don't have the same 4-wheel drive system as the GC's is because of the size of the transfer case/trans. Too big I guess. The rear drive shaft woud be 3" long if they put one in a wrangler.

Lollercaust!!!
i guess when the 3.7 V6 engine comes out, there will be a chance due to it being shorter than the I6.....plus the 4door option. we will see.

Have you ever wheeled a GC? If you haven't, save the effort and applying it to something more useful, such as sorting your sock drawer. Part time 4WD is the only way to go when the going is off-road.

What is the difference between full time and part time?

Any major differences?

Cheers

The part time system in the Wranglers locks the drive shafts together. Therefore, it can not be used in places where the tires do not slip a little as the drive shafts would begin to try to turn at different speeds. With them locked together as such, and no slip, it might be a disaster when they try to turn at different speeds. Therefore, since both turn at the same rate, it is more desirable offroad.
The GCs full time system has a differential in it and as such the drive shafts are not locked together and can spin at different rates making it such as it can be used all the time. However, it is not as good for offroad use as the part time system.
At least that's what I've heard.

Speaking of that, at the Jamboree at Paragon last weekend I was talking with some Chrysler/Jeep folks and asked about the new wrangler...and the only thing I got out of them was that the 3.7 V6 would be "retooled" to a 4.0 so as to keep the 4.0 branding.

Who knows if it's true or not, but its gossip!

That would be easy enough to do, they'd just bore the cylanders a little larger. This would give them the 4.0 badge and give us a little more power, without much loss in MPG. The only concern would be overheating, as the walls would be thinner, but with today's cooling systems, that might not be a big problem.

It's going to take a healthy overbore to punch a 3.7 out to a 4.0. That's a little under a 10% increase in displacement. Besides, I would much rather they stroke it.
