Painting the Wheels while still on

I was wondering if anything thinks this is a TERRIBLE idea. I don't have the day it would take to remove them full and let them dry. I was thinking if I did light enough coats I could knock them out in about 6 hours then let them dry over night without ever having to remove them from the axle.

that is a bad idea, you dont want to get paint on your brakes, and it will be easier to get even paint if you paint horizontally.

The quality of a paint job lies in the preparation. Take off your spare. Start there. When finished, swap it with one on your Jeep and so on.

+1 on that. If truly an issue...just deal with the look of doing 1 wheel off the rig at a time.

Also buy a deck of playing cards and stuff them between the bead and the rim

I painted mine using duplicolor wheel paint, it worked great, not a lot of prep work.

I basically roughed them up with a brillo pad and then cleaned them well with alcohol and then multiple coats of paint.

Definitely do one at a time.
If you deflate the tire completely, it is easier to mask the tire. Spend a little extra effort masking the valve stem; a piss poor job there makes the whole operation look amateurish.

I've painted wheels without taking them off.
It works, but I don't recommend it, even though I had no negative consequences.
It really doesn't take a lot of time to get them off, and in fact probably took more time to write this psot and check it.
You'll do a much better job if you take them off, as I do now.

and you didn't even check i very good lol you still mispelled post, anyway,

I painted my stock wheels with some black spray paint and i took them off masked them with 3"x5" index cards like someone here suggested and tried using lots of light coats. I cleaned them and spent what i thought was a long time prepping them by cleaning and sanding them with a scuffing pad. They still didn't look that good. they were fine from 10 feet away but i wasn't happy with them. Good luck maybe you are a better painter than me.

i painted my stock silverado rims (winter rims) while they were on the vehicle. I was a little lazy doing them as i didnt go out and buy masking tape etc... Easy way to spray them without painting your tires too is make sure the rubber part of the tire is wet I used tire shine (plenty). I took a paper plate and cut it in half and then trimmed it so I could hold it at the edge of the rim near the bead to keep large amounts of paint on the rubber. the overspray stuck to the tire shine which I later just wiped off. leaving me with brand new looking rims and shiney tires

2 years and 2 winters later and the rims still look great
