Oversize Tire on Stock Rear Tire Carrier?

Will a 31 X 10.5 X 15 inch tire on a stock Canyon wheel (15 X 8 inch) fit on the stock rear tire carrier of a 2003 TJ without modifications? I have a P235/75R15 on there now on a stock Jeep steel wheel and there appears to be enough room top and bottom but it may be close. Also, the Canyon wheel is wider than the steel wheel. Will that require any modification?

Thanks!
John

You can modify it to fit just about any size tire. What I would be more concerned with is the weight of the tire and wheel, more so than the size of the wheel and tire.

I don't see why it wouldn't fit.

i have my 33x1250 on my stock tire carrier. all i did was remove the 3rd brake light, remove the bumpstops, and add some spacers to the bottom lug to move the bottom of the tire out so it didnt hit the bumper. before that i had a 31x1050 on the stock spare rim on the rear with only the bumpstops removed

A 31 will be just fine. It's when you get to the 33's that things start to get a little hairy on the stock carrier.

A 31 is what the rubicon's come stock with and I don't see any difference than their stock carrier is with any other TJ. You should be fine. Just make sure the tire is tightened firmly against the rubber stops so it doesn't rattle.

I had a 33x12.50x15 on mine for a few years before I finally bought a swing-away rear bumper. With the offset of the wheel, it fit fine, but it would rub a bit on the rear bumper. A 31 will be just fine.

I needed a couple of washers under the 3rd brake light. Otherwise fits fine.

I fit 33s on my stock one... I soon bought an extended heavy duty tire carrier though since I don't have the cash for a rear bumper and swing away carrier.

I see everything that says 33 max on stock tire carrier, but it may hurt the tailgate. Well I have a 32" tire on my stock wheel. Should the oem tire carrier be no problem to use?
