Is our abs a joke?
i find it funny that everytime i have a panic stop or slow down such as a car pulling out in front of me my jeep loves to lock the brakes, make a ton of smoke and play a symphony of squeeling. i have had 2 sports cars before this and it really makes me mad at the extreme difference in stopping power.

Install bigger tires, that will immediately cease to be a problem.

Are you honestly surprised that a high center of gravity rock crawler with large diameter tires and a short wheel base has poorer handling characteristics than a purpose built sports car?? Maybe you need to change the way you drive. How, at 17, have you already had two sports cars?

no its not the handling characteristics its the fact that my jeep equipped with antilock brakes locks the brakes so easily! How about 'possiblylock brakes' or 'mostlikelylock brakes'

How do you know for sure your TJ has ABS brakes? Not all do.
By the way, I can't remember the last time I felt I needed to lock up my brakes or "play a symphony of squeeling". Maybe at age 17 you need to learn to drive in such a way where you won't feel the need to do all that.

stupid question...but are you sure you have ABS? If you're only going by what someone said, look under the master cylinder. There's a tray...if it's empty, no ABS.
Edit: Jerry asked first. |

If your jeep has ABS then the brakes WONT lock up. Thats the entire purpose of ABS....

I've never been a fan of ABS.
When I stomp my brakes I want my head to slam against the steering wheel. I don't want my butthole to start puckering as my brakes grab and release while I get closer and closer to bouncing Grandma in a walker off my bumper. |

let me echo the "are you sure you have ABS" question, far as I know it was never an option on the SE.
Look below your brake booster on the firewall, is that metal tray under there empty or full of valves and brake lines? |

I do have ABS as I ordered it. I've never been able to slam on the breaks hard enough on dry pavement to engage the ABS. However I certainly have on snow and ice roads which makes it great to have.

If you have a 2005 SE I doubt you have ABS unless you special ordered it. In fact I don't think it was even an option on the SE...

the dealership said i got abs and ac... But the locking up has only happened twice and once was today when the lady in front of me slammed on the brakes in her minivan for no reason. And dont make the assumption that because im young i cant drive, if i responsibly drove my 2 previous forced induction performance cars on the street and tore it up on the track i think i can handle the beast that is the wrangler se

Car salesman tend to know nearly nothing about what they sell. Not a lot of TJ's had ABS. As said, look under the hood!

Do you have the build sheet? If not you can ask them for it, that will let you know for sure.
You can also use this link to request it: http://www.jeep.com/wccsapp/universal/J/index.jsp?appStr=wccs&titleStr=Contact+Jeep&family Str=brand&franchise=J&actionURL=%2Fwccs%2Fbrand_fo rms%2Fus%2Fwebform.jsp&promotion=null&category=R

There's barely a 17 year old driver in the world, including my 17 year old son, who doesn't think he's a great driver.
