Magic Marker will burn off. Also, the colored replacement bulbs you can buy at advance or auto zone or walmart also burn the color off. They only last a short while.
Walmart, AutoZone and Advance use to sell the condoms in red green and blue i believe. if not all three of them then at least one of those stores did.
I used to buy the colored bulbs for my dome lights when i was in high school, the color went away too quickly, so i tried coloring it myself. Which didnt work either.

Red is actually hard on the eyes, it just doesn't cause the pupils to dilate as much so it is used to help preserve night vision.

Well, just thought I would ressurect this thread and say that I did this today. It actually does look a lot better. I'll try and take a pic of them maybe tomorrow night. As for the "condoms" being difficult to take off, for me, they just pulled right off. I don't know how easy they would be to put back on, but really, I don't plan on ever putting them back on.

I was just up there last weekend for a wedding at a State Park, can't remember the name of the park....but there was a lake a main lodge and a bunch of really small cabins that you could rent. It was about 15 minutes from the College, we could have gone wheelin' instead of going to the wedding !!
