Opinions on my build - newbie chick
Ok, so here's the deal. My BF has a Jeep (I think it's a "TJ").
He's always working on it, driving it offroad, or is on Jeep Forum. So I figured I'd get one too and we could do this stuff together. Bear with me because I am new to this stuff. I don't want to just do the stuff to it that he suggests without doing some research and making my own decisions. Actually, he said that is how I should do it. So, here I am doing my research. (Also, cut me some slack because I don't spend much time on the computer or the internet.) My new Jeep: 2005 Rubicon Unlimited (I believe that makes it an "LJ"). The lady I bought it from just drove it, didn't change anything. It has an automatic transmission. BF says "if it was mine I would": -highline tube fenders (don't even know what that means) -something about 5.13 gears -put van brakes on it? -curry steering? -CV shaft rear drive -lift the body and motor 1" and tuck the tummy (really lost me there) -35" tires -flexible arms? -disconnect the swaying ba-he also said I should get some "armor", but that I would have to decide aht kind I liked But, he says I need to learn more before I change anything. He also said we should go to some trails with it like it is so I can learn to drive it. He is out of town this week and I want to suprise him by being "Jeep smarter" when he gets home. Can you explian some of this stuff to me? Or tell me why it is a bad idea? I know it's asking a lot, I just don't know where to start and he said I could learn a lot on here... I do also have a co-worker right next to me that has a Jeep and knows a lot, but he is always so busy and I hate to bother him. Thanks in advanced!

Well, you already have a nicer Jeep than your BFs. What are you gong to do with it?
If you plan on off roading alot then some of the BFs recommendations make sense. If you are more DD and probably not.

Be prepared to spend a lot of money... the jeep becomes an addiction... I didnt see anything about a lift in there, besides a body lift. What size lift do you feel you want?

Do all the mods your BF says to(and use his credit card).

OK, so anybody else?
Any tips, advise, or info would be appreciated! This will be something we can do together, and I think it will be great. But I don't want to be the GF that hangs around asking dumb question and annoys him. I want to learn as much on my own as I can. |

If you ever leave your bf shoot me a PM!
Your bf has some good ideas but I think the best is that you should go for a few offroad trips first. You might find out that you would rather just ride with him. Or, you might find out that you absolutely love it and want to sink some real money and time into it. Either way, you will have a chance to see what you really need and what you think you can get away without. Enjoy your Jeep, figure out what you want to do, and plan ahead. There is no sense putting 33" tires on it if you really know you want 35's. I created a spreadsheet with all of the future mods I want to do, how much they will cost, and when I can realistically spend the money. Things change, and as they do so does my spreadsheet. But, it keeps me focused on the end goal and keeps me from spending money unneccesarily. Good luck and keep us updated. |

He said with the fender things and the body lifted and the tummy tucked I wouldn't need a lift. Is he all wrong?

Suzy- 1st off,
Your BF definately has a master plan in mind, but I'd strongly recommend you drive it as-is for a while like your BF recommended and see exactly how well a Jeep can perform in it's stock state, specially a Rubi. Next, I'd get a feel for how much offroading you really feel you'd end up doing. While the BF's mods are certainly all decent, some might be waaayy overkill for a DD rig or a Jeep you may not keep forever. Some of those mods don't lend themselves to good resale as the Jeep will then be perceived to have been abused regardless how you actually treated it. If it were me I'd do a simple lift in the 3-4" range and add some 33's to the stock Moab wheels with some spacers(spidertrax) and then add whatever armor you feel you need and give it a go for a while. An LJ set up that way looks and performs better than stock, but will still retain nearly all of the factory ride, plus you don't need to regear and invest nearly the amount of coin that your BF has slated for you. Good luck and enjoy. Take advantage of the help of you nosey co-worker if he offers. And you two try not to get fired by wasting company money on JF! |
