Opening full door causes it to lock halfway. help?

I'm having a problem with the passenger door on my LJ. When I open the door from the outside, locks itself half way. When I close it again, it locks fully, after which I have to use the key to unlock the door to open it. I took the door panel off to see the mechanism, but I am not sure what is wrong or how to fix it.

I am at a loss, and have no idea what to do. I haven't had much time to work on it, but once I figure out what's wrong, I'll devote more time to it.

Please help me!

If I push and hold the switch into the unlock position and pull the latch inside it works, so you don't have to use the key from the inside. Have you tried to fix it at all, or have any idea how to?

I had this and it turned out to be a piece of plastic that had broken off and lodged itself into the latch area of the door.
Take the door off, turn it upside down and shake.
You should hear it fall out and hopefully when turned back over into the bottom of the door.

I had this problem as well. 2 things I did to fix it. 1. those plastic purple clips wear out and it allows play in metal rod causing it to bind instead of opening. I bought some plastic washers and added them to eliminate the play. 2. After i replaced the plastic washers there was still some occasional binding. If you take notice you will see the angle is off and it is pushing outward instead of upward causing it to bind. So I put a slight bend in the bar until it angled properly to the latch. Been over 6 months now and have had no problems. Hope this helps.

Ok. That's what I thought was happening. So I should bend the rod going toward the key lock? And could you give me more information on the washers?

When i get home tonight i will take a look and see if i still have the bag that the washers came in to give you the size i used. They were the white plastic crown brand from home depot. The hole was just big enough to snap on over the end of the plastic nipple but move freely. I think i used 2 or 3 to get rid of the slop.

As far as bending the bar it was the smaller bar thats causing the problem. I think looking straight at the inside door it needed to go a little to the right. Bend it a little bit and test fit it without the plastic clips. You will know right away if you are going in the wrong direction it will just bind more. It was a very minor bend to get it to work freely. The problem is most of the latch parts that wear are plastic so it gives to much play in the rod and the rod binds. By bending it a little you are compensating for the slack.
