A friend of mine has a 2006 he bought used a year or so ago. The recall had been done for the gear but the bearing in the shaft developed a roar. I think it cost him around $120 for the shaft complete with sensor, cheeper than Auto Zone or Oreilly. Easy to change if that's all that's wrong.

2005 lj opda

well I just got done reading the entire post regarding the unknown issue with the 05 and 06 jeeps. Yes I am one of the victims now. My LJ with 48,000 is now in the shop and needs a new motor. started with laughing monkey, cam sensor fail code, missing on cylinder 6. The result, a lifter like the original post on this thread, a chewed up cam and metal throughout the motor. Now in need of a rebuild however I dont want to use the same block. Any suggestions? Iam not a mechanic and this repair is probably going to run 4000.00 . I also think in time people like me are going to be added to this list. Too many jeeps with the same issue.

jprotain, let us know what you end up doing. I've wondered if it would go for a rebuild engine or get whatever money I could out of the body and move on.

For those of you that may not already know, I have designed a retrofit kit that addresses all of the problems related to the OEM OPDA.
Search my posts and you'll find all the info you need...
I'm just glad that I can help out you fellow Jeepers

New member here, just wanted to throw this in here.

I used this thread to diagnose a faulty cam syncro gear on my 2005 TJ Unlimited with 135,000kms.
Damaged the cam as well.

FYI,
I'm replacing the entire unit with a new one from Chrysler for $236 CAD.
Also replacing camshaft with Melling factory replacement.

The factory TSB showed a kit to fix this problem but the kit has been discontinued so I opted for a new replacement, out of pocket.

I also missed this info blurb:

2005 LJ ~135k kilo's 8/2005
2. Brief description of the problem and any collateral damage. Please include pictures if available.
Building 4.6L Stroker, noticed damage upon disassembly.
3. Actions taken to fix the problem
Replace unit.
4. Approximate cost of repair
$236
5. Did Chrysler pay for or reimburse any of the repairs?
no, out of warranty
6. If Chrysler did pay, what steps were taken to make them pay
7. Has the problem returned?
Parts guy seems to think this is a new updated model?
I'm going to try to locate a brass drive gear so it doesn't damage the cam next time.

Just bought the Jeep two weeks ago, wasn't aware of opda problem. Had an '06 before, but it had the 2.4L. First read of the problem last night.
Ironically, first heard the noise today pulling out of the parking lot at my complex. Monkey noise accelerating at 2,000 rpm until the engine was warm.
10F outside today. Jeep doesn't fit in the garage and it's killer windy out, so I just pulled the nose in to check the opda.
I didn't have much light to work with, hood couldn't go up all the way, and AirRaid intake was blocking me from getting close,
but the cam gear looked ok from what I could see. Is that even possible, being that my opda's gear looks so shot?

Worn gear on OPDA. Cam gear didn't look too bad, but didn't get a good view.

3. Actions taken to fix the problem
Reading about that now...

I have read most of the information on this forum regarding the real & potential problems, so I bought a new OPDA and the SG mod kit. Took mine out for the swap and it looked really good. There were no signs of unusual wear so I took no pictures. I did have a loud ticking noise at start up, that seems to be gone now.

Spoke to a mechanic at the Jeep dealership here he said he knows some of the 05 06 TJ's had this problem he said the easiest way to determine if your OPDA it is a bad one with out pulling it out is to just touch the OPDA while the engine is running and if there is a separate vibration thats not related to the normal vibration from the motor its bad.

Thanks very much, I bet many dealers in Aus don't even know about this.

1. Year, model, mileage, and build date of your Jeep
2005 aus tj 89000km ~ 55000 miles bought brand new.

2. Brief description of the problem and any collateral damage. Please include pictures if available.
paranoid from new read TSB - read on this forum,
recently noticed maybe slight squeal, kinda like timing chain lash, mainly when hot and particularly on declaration.
pulled unit pics attached.
scorching, abnormal wear on odpa gear and cam gear.

- is wear on the square tip of shaft that slots into oil pump drive normal or part of this ?

3. Actions taken to fix the problem
called dealership at ~ 3000 KM was informed that only a few were included
and all were replaced at the docks.
(obviously not including a girlfriend who suffered complete failure at 6000 km ? ).
.. to be continued ..

4. Approximate cost of repair
stroker from a pre 05 model including computer etc. etc. ?
