Which one will stick out further?

1) -38 backspacing, 4 inch backside

2) -46 backspacing, 3 5/8 inch backside

I can't seem to figure out this whole wheel shopping thing...what wheel will stick out further?

Thanks, that's helpfull, but I'm confused with the different backspacing vs. backside measurement.

I hope there is a pro here that can tell me at a glance, which wheel will stick out further.

I think you meant to say

1) -38 offset, 4 inch backspacing

2) -46 offset, 3 5/8 inch backspacing

in which case wheel 2 will stick out farther. (3/8" farther)

Most stock wheels have 5.5" of backspacing, the smaller the number, the farther the wheel sticks out.

Offset is the distance from the center of the wheel to the surface that mounts on to the hub. Backspace is the distance from the inside edge of the wheel to the mounting surface. Offset can be positive or negative.

Pos/Neg refers to form equal...4 back 4 foward is 0 back spacing or 4"s. if it a 10" rim it has 4" back spacing it is also refered to as 1" (+/-) not really sure. Generally jeeps wheels are refered to by the back spacing number and the width.

I think I see a problem with that diagram. If you click on "How to measure backspacing & offset". They state the rim width is from between the bead seats. When it's actually the overall width, measured from the flanges. Theirs would throw you off about 1/4" - 1/2"

Wheel width is measured between the bead surfaces, not to the outside of the wheel.

This is why a 8" wide wheel with 4" of backspacing does not have 0mm offset. Instead it has -12mm offset, which is the 1/2" difference caused by the thickness of the bead mounting surface.

Yeah, I got corrected. I was confused on where the wheel width is measured from. It is between the bead surfaces, backspacing is measured from the rear flange.
cheers, LT
