I just did an oil change (went from regular to synthetic), and 6 quarts put me just above the safe band on the dip stick.

Is that right after? If so it's normal for it to be a little over since the filter hasn't fully saturated yet.

That may explain why you only get 5 qts back OUT, but all my I-6s have read a little over full with 6qts even after filter fill. Not to worry.

I know I am about 12 years late on a response here, but I put 6 quarts of oil in my 2000 jeep TJ last weekend as the manual stated. Weird there is that I had no leaks or anything up to that point, but only 5 quarts came out when i changed it. (I didn't change my oil previously, a shop did). I noticed a couple drops of oil on the ground, and it was coming from valve seal Looks like I am in the 'Do not overfill" section. The manual says 6, but that is wrong as it showing overfill. It should be around 5.5.

The missing quart got burnt off or 'escaped' onto the ground. Not unusual.

My 4.0 takes 6 quarts. I put 5+ in, start her and let her run for about 60 seconds. Shut her down, let her sit for 5, and you will see she needs another 1/2 quart to top her off.

My 2.5 takes 4 quarts, same deal. Put in 3+ she looks full on the dipstick. Run her for a minute, let her sit. Check again, needs a bit more to top her off to full.

Patience
