Mine is a little temperamental at times. It really likes the clutch all the way to the floor or it is a bit rough going into gear.

I was taught that shifting technique in 1963 when I was 15 and learning how to shift a buddy's '57 VW bug that didn't have a synchronized Reverse gear and that technique is still useful to this day.
^This. My first car was a 88 Toyota Pickup and I learned that if I didn't want to grind it into reverse, I'd have to do that. It became a habit and now every time I drive any manual, I go into first before I go into reverse.

Just found this thread.

All of you who have the NSG370 should find out if your transmission has had this service performed. Have your VIN checked at the dealer of your choice to find if yours is in the system as having been repaired. If not, it's worth having it done, even if you are not currently experiencing this problem. It is a very involved fix.

There is a TSB for this problem. This happened in my 2005 X. It was due to insufficiently robust internal linkage. It breaks internally and will not allow the trans to be fully shifted into reverse all the time. This was happening in mine since the day I got it "new" off the lot. (I quote "new" because it had 2,000 miles when I got it. It had been in the middle of a sale to someone else who had already been driving it until the deal somehow fell through. I believe it happened when this person had it for those 2,000 miles)

Take it to your local and most trusted dealer. They should take car of it for $0, as they did mine. It's covered by the factory through the TSB. For those unaware, TSB stands for Technical Service Bulletin. They are one step down from a recall, as far as I know.

On a side note, upon tearing mine apart, there apparently was a rather sticky bearing that would not be pressed out and they broke my case in the process of dis-assembling it. The transsmission guy said he'd done many of these TSB's and had never had one do this. BUT, they took care of it all, replacing all the damaged items and installing the newly designed, more robust internals, free of charge.

I have not had a problem since and it now has 65,000 miles and has been wheeled pretty hard by me.

Hope this helps!!!!

TSBs are only performed for free if the Jeep is still under Warranty and if the problem the TSB addresses is actually happening. Once the Warranty is up, the dealer will charge to perform a TSB.

DAMN! Jerry, I was just going to ask. I have a 2005...but only 29k miles. Any chance they'd do it for free still?

Never hurts to try!!! Wish you the best!! In my case, I had the 7/75 warranty, but was below the basic warranty for time and mileage anyway.

I have heard that some dealers were giving a free 7/75 extended warranty with purchase of certain Jeeps. (That's how I got my 7/75) They didn't tell me that I got the extension at the time of purchase though. I didn't find out 'til I went in for the trans. problem. Talk about a nice surprise!!!

Again....wish you the best!!

I tried two different dealerships with no luck. Paid out of pocket... Oh well she is my baby after all. Nothing but the best. Just got her back two days ago. (Simply not going in reverse was not really a long term solution.)

I think I may be experiencing a similar condition. Do you mind sharing how much the cost for the fix was (the TSB)?

I do not know what all is replaced under the TSB, but I had the synco and reverse gear itself replaced. These parts were replaced with the updated parts which are intended to reduce the possibility of the failure occurring again (so says my mechanic whom I trust as I have worked with the guys at my dealership for several years on several different Jeeps). My total including tax was $1731. A lot more than I would have liked to spend, but I got a good enough deal on my baby to consider this still an overall good deal.

Thanks for the info. Did this fix the problem with it popping out of gear and not engaging?

it turns out that my jeep is still under warranty. horray for me! I must have the extended warranty as well. The tranny work is going to be paid for by the powertrain warranty. The only out of pocket should be $100 deductible. The jeep goes in for surgery next week.

To be honest, I am happy to have finally found a solid answer... Even if it did cost me more than a mortgage payment... I am also please that other people are getting theirs taken care of with minimal cost out of pocket, at least someone is benefiting from this. Thanks JF for at least giving me the answer.
