NP231 Tansfer case fluid +3 or +4

Yahoo answers says
Quote:
Jeep recommends 2 Quarts of ATF+3 (Or ATF+4) Fluid in the NP231 Transfer Case that comes on your Jeep Vehicle. Use of any other fluids may cause problems and will void your warranty.
But which is it +3 or +4? Does it matter, and does brand matter?

You should consult your owners manual or a Factory Service Manual for the correct fluid specifications. If you don't have an owners manual, you really should get one.

As long as the fluid has the correct label, it will work.

Transfer Case
-NV231 Part-Time (Command-Trac) - 2.2 Pints (1.0L)
Dexron III/Mercon or ATF+3 or ATF+4 Type 7176

-NV242 Full-Time (Selec-Trac) – 2.85 Pints (1.3L)
Dexron III/Mercon or ATF+3 or ATF+4 Type 7176

They are backwards compatible. The ATF+4 is just made to meet a newer spec. If your specs show ATF+3 you can use either, but if it says ATF+4 you wouldn't want to use ATF+3.

The 231 transfer case is totally care-free so far as the type of ATF it gets, it is the automatic transmission that is very fussy that way. It will be just as happy with ATF+3 as it would be with ATF+4, and it would actually be happy with any good quality ATF. The owner's manual only specifies a particular ATF for the 231 transfer case so as to match whatever the automatic transmission for that model year requires.

good call (forget that sometimes) and yes it is Mopar Dexron II, or ATF+3 Type 7176

and as you said. +4 will work. I can buy either of the three. It's often very cold here, is Dexron II better than ATF+3? (or vice versa?)

So it simply doesn't matter which... (I don't like choosing)

In EXTREMELY cold conditions like you can get there in Wyoming, I'd go with a fully synthetic ATF+4. Synthetics flow better in extreme cold.

Any major brand synthetic ATF+4 will be fine for this.

If anyone is looking for more on ATF +3 vs +4 this is a good link.

Chrysler transmission fluids: 7176, ATF+3, ATF+4

Quote:
The Center for Quality Assurance, which Chrysler uses to run its ATF+4 licensing program, wrote: “The previous MOPAR ATF+3® formulation was discontinued in 2005 and ATF+4® is recommended for all transmissions filled with ATF+3®.”
