NP 242 selec-trac in a TJ?

Just like the title says anyone ever seen/done it? Im curious if it would work in my TJ because the fulltime 4x4 would be great to have here in UT and they can be had for dirt cheap in good working condition..

any thoughts?

I don't know what is required, but it would have been a nice option in the TJ. My wife's KJ has Selec-Trac (which was an option over Command-Trac) and we use it all the time whenever the roads are wet or in mixed road conditions during winter.

Okay, found this write up. A guy lost fluids in his 242 and found a 231 for cheap. Interesting read.
http://www.hobbyguild.com/jeep/index.html

Also, found this on just general information on the 242.
http://www.ezinearticles.com/?Jeep-Select-Trac-NP-242-Transfer-Case-Information&id=281045

Like I said, I think the 242 is a great option for it's full-time. The wife and I drove the KJ about 3,000 miles two winters ago and I kept the full-time engaged for most of the trip.

Ignore my previous post. I was thinking about the clocking on the AW4 transmission itself. The transfer cases are fine.

Most newer ones should all be 23 splines in and out.

The input shaft on 1991 and newer NP242 transfer cases should be 23 splines.

The only odd ball transmission on Wranglers that I know of is the AX5 with the 21 spline output.

Man I've been wanting to do this to our 2 YJ's forever! We also have a WJ with the 242 & I love it!

Here is a link to an article I found, maybe you've already seen it, but it looks very doable! There is some difference in DS length, because the cases are different dimensions, but it doesn't seem to be a huge problem.

http://www.weatherlover1.com/jeep/242.htm

BTW, some ZJ's (very few!) came with AX-15 trannies (23 spline output shaft) and I'm pretty sure those had the NP242 and not the NP249.

Crawlin' this thread!

The auto trannies weren't 21 spline?

I can't remember......
