Are you turning on dry pavement?

When you shift into four wheel drive, the front and rear drive shaft have to travel at the same speed...which means that the front and rear wheels have to travel the same distance/speed. They don't. This is similar to how an open differential allows the inside and outside wheels, through a turn, travel at different speeds. But the transfer case locks the driveshafts together. Any time on dry ground, even grass, or light snow, dirt, or just wet pavement, when you turn your steering wheel all the way to either side, it forces the axles (driveshafts) to move at quite different speeds. Since the driveshafts are coupled together, this results in wheelhop-like issues, and driveline binding, you can feel this through the steering wheel. This is probably the issue. With almost all part time 4wd systems, they are intended for use on terrain/conditions where some slippage will occur (less resistance than dry pavement) where the driveline wont bind up. Thats just how part time 4wd works, though some newer systems relieve driveline binding.
Though, if it is only hard right turns, that is interesting. It should 'knock' turning in either direction. When in 4x4 taking hard left turns, do you get and similar feedback through the steering wheel, or do you believe it is just in the transfer case? When you drive with the emergency brake somewhat or totally on, you can feel it through the steering wheel especially when turning, though this should not matter whether in 4wd or not...just something else to check. If this only happens in four wheel drive, then it must be the transfer case, and If you get knock/bumpy feedback through the steering wheel, its just driveline bind. Happens to all of us. |
