I have the linkage installed now, but i just haven't bent the rod because i'm wanting to do a belly up skid and I don't want to bend the rod twice.

Just completed the install. I like it, took longer than I thought it would. A few issues I do have, 1. When you remove the stock shifter your left with a good size hole. I am told a shift boot will fix this, 2. after driving for some time the novak shifter gets very hot. dont know if the shift boot will help this or not, I have been looking to correct both issue

So this completly replaces the shift linkage/ handle that is accessible in the cab(does it install on the body or the t-case?)? and you can't use the original boot on the T-case shifter? heat issues(how hot?) and what about bending the rod? just don't want to spend twice if I don't have too! thanks for the replies

i have one in my YJ and they connect to the same spot as ur stock one does.
i like mine. i think the heat is bc he dosnt have any boot on it. thats all it could be. its not like their is energy goin through the handle to heat it up its just from the Trannyand Tcase. you have to have differant rods when you do a belly up skid or a BL. its the rod that goes from the handle to the lever on the T case |

The novak mounts to the t case not to the body. Kaketj theres no original boot for the T case, The stock 4wd handle mounts to a metal plate No boot. YJscott I didnt need any other rod that what came in the kit, I have 1"bl in my TJ. Right now with out a boot to cover the hole over the t case the handle does get very hot. Bending the shift handle wasnt hard. again it is a great kit and shifting is so easy now.

I guess the shifter on The T/C has a nut that needs to come off that's a real bear. This may just be on the 241 though. Sealing the floor is an issue most have resolved by getting a generic shifter boot from the locall auto parts place and installing.

overall the installation on the 231 is easy. if you don't have the front of the center console in you can run it with out bending the rod. I did this with the stock tranny skid and 1" bl as well as my flat skid and 1" BL. (stated in first reply)
eventually i will get around to bending the shifter since my belly up is finished.

I have installed mine (still not quite finished as I have to plug the hole in the body better) and I love it. There are a few things that make the project take longer than you think...
1) The torx in the stock arm on the transfer case took me and a buddy 3 hours to remove. May be only the 241 case that is a problem (as stated) 2) Finding the correct holes that produce the shifter throw you want in the cabin can take a while. Then determining the bend in the shifter to pass through the hole also, takes a while (although I'm a perfectionist so maybe it will be easier for others). 3) Eliminating noise through the hole I haven't completed but by making a knob out of delrin/nylon makes the temperature normal. Not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter. When you remove the stock shifter, you can use the metal mount plate (once you cut the middle out) as a frame for clamping shift boots in place.

The hardest part of the install is bending the shifter. It just takes some patience to get it right.
Here are a couple pics of it installed. linkage at t-case: 2-hi: 4-lo: |

Novaks shifter just plain rules. The high heat factor is a very real issue and one that is being dealt with. The heat you are feeling is residual heat coming off of your engine and into the gaping hole that is where the shifter is, look at it this way. The original shifter is big and plastic that was held in a cocoon of sorts, plastic will shed heat rapidly. Novaks shifter is all steel with an aluminum knob and we all know how aluminum will absorb heat like theres no tomorrow. Also there is no cocoon or cage around their configuration to help divert the engine heat.
Novak is working on the 'cage' configuration even as we speak so the heat will be diverted. As an aside; I put foam rubber in the gaping shifter hole before my panel was re-installed and this helped some. The transfer case oil temp was checked multiple times when I first installed my shifter and experienced the heat factor, I found no alarming changes between stock shifter oil temp and Novak shifter oil temp. You could fabricate your own air dam around your shifter with sheet metal if you were so inclined also. Been using mine for over a year now and love it!! Olsen |

what I did for the hole was went to pep boys and got a Hurst Shifter boot. It was the only one I could find at the local places that had a plate that screwed to the bottom as opposed to just fitting in the hole. It has 4 screws that went through the body to cover the hole. I still haven't done anything about the 4 other holes where the factory shifter attached. I plan on using some rubber plugs, but i keep forgetting to look for them when i'm out
