No first/second/reverse gear. Reverse clanks

Me and a buddy were driving up this old logging trail until we couldnt get any farther. After being pulled backwards uphill, out of some snow, we continued to drive back down the hill.
It cleared into this opening, with a dirt mound with some snow, on which i proceeded to drive up, slide sideways, and stop. i then tried to put it in reverse, and it would just grind, in 2wd 4wd and 4wdl. first and second gear did the same thing. after messing with it, by putting the transmission in neutral, and then putting it in first, i was able to drive all the way back down the hill. got to an open parking lot, and then i couldnt put it in any of the gears, until i continued to mess with it some more.
By 'mess with it', i mean shifing between 2wd and 4wd, neutral, and trying to put it into gear.
After a while of this, i can now shift into first and second without putting in the clutch, and it doesnt grind or anything. i can also put it into reverse, let out the clutch, and it makes a clanking noise.

Third, fourth, and fifth gear are perfectly fine, and i can start out in third and it will drive and shift to fourth and fifth normally

This sounds familiar to anyone??

I havent searched yet because i dont have time, but in the next hour, ill get a few pics up of where i was stuck, and also search for similair problems.
thanks guys

edit: also, ive had it for about three weeks or so, it has 121k miles, ive put on about 400 or so. not sure how many previous owners. bought it from a dealership without warranty

You might have just damaged those particular gears. It is unusual. As a mechanic myself, don't hear of this too often. What does the linkage look like. It's possible the lever looks like it's in gear when the linkage is only half way. Thus grindage. The clunk might be the mount. Reverse is different then all forward gears and therefor can have different problems associated with it.
