is new starter no good?

2002 wrangler 4.0
Starter went yesterday. Put new starter in now it now cranks over very slowly. If it doesnt catch right away, the battery dies.
The battery is several years old but had given me now problems. My question is, could this new starter be bad?

possibly, but more than likley is your battery. try jumping your jeep with another vehicle. if it starts while jumping then you need a new battery. if it doesnt start you can pull the starter back out and have it tested.

You were right. The battery was toast.
Just an unlucky coincidence.
