New speedo gear = AWFUL gas mileage... Why?

I am running 32x11.5's with 3.73's, 4.0l auto. The speedo gear chart said I needed a 32 tooth gear. I ordered it, put it in my jeep. Everything works great. I reset my computer after changing the gear as well. The only problem is that based on the mileage my odom says and my fuel consumption, I'm getting about 4 miles to the gallon. What is wrong here? Did I use the wrong gear? Has anyone else had this problem?

Did you check your speed against a gps to see if your speedo is accurate?

The only thing that i can think of is did you turn the housing to match the numbers to the dot on the transfer case?

Here is a website to show you what i mean

I thought I lined it up right. I will recheck later today. I don't have a gps. I'm still remedial in that sense.

You dont need a GPS to check the accuracy. You can use the mile marker signs on the highway. Obviously the mile marker signs are 1 mile appart, if your odometer reads more than 1 mile inbetween the signs it is wrong and running fast.

A 32 speedometer gear is correct. Don't bother rotating the speedometer gear housing as if the speedometer is working smoothly, the speedo gear is properly meshed with the pinion gear inside. That's the only purpose of rotating the housing, so the speedo and pinion gears properly mesh.

What might have happened was when you disco'd the battery to reset the computer, you forgot it also resets the trip odometer so you have likely driven a lot further than your trip odometer is now indicating.

also, while going down the highway and zipping by those miles markers, drive 60mph (use creuise control if you have it), and when you pass the first mile marker, note your trip odometer reading and time it with a stop watch.

at a true 60mph, you will go 1 mile in 1 minute.

I just went through quadratec. ordered it right off their website. They have a yj and tj option. they are two separate part #'s.

This is the one for the tj: http://www.quadratec.com/products/55200_40.htm
