So I pulled the covers off to day and it's true... I have 4.88s in the rear and what appears to be 3.73 in front which doesn't make any sense to me because I thought it would be 4.10 if anything... Maybe I didn't calc it right so correct me if I'm wrong but in front there are 41 teeth on ring gear and 11 on pinion gear which comes to 3.727?????

98 TJ 4cyl, 4" lift ,35s, super 35-lock rite, smitty armed all the way around....SOLD
99 Sahara, 4" lift, 35s, 8.8, 4.56s, Detroit locker......SOLD
Looking for new project

The manual 4 banger should have come with 4.10s. My guess would be the previous owner swapped the front axle and never changed the gears. Maybe you got lucky and have a HP 30?

This is exactly why when people ask if they can just regear the rear first and do the front later I say you shouldn't. The previous PO (or POS) never regeard the front and you're stuck with paying to regear. And it's gonna cost you some bills..

Yup, stinks that they never told you about only regearing rear!
Good catch... that you notices it before causing serious damage...hopefully!
That's why I removed front drive shaft till I could regear front axle the way I wanted to.

Sounds correct, but I always just count drive shaft revolutions.... easier!

Sounds like you rescued that TJ from the PO.

Rokmen TT, Rokmen control arms, Novak NV241 cable shifter, JKS 1.25" BL + 1" MML.

Anybody can take advice if it doesn't interfere with their plan.

whats an HP 30? and how would i tell?

and yes i did rescue it... the PO didnt have a clue but im not sure if it was him or the person before him that jacked with the axles, either way doesnt make much sense to me. anyone else have any other idea about the 3.73 in the front? and obviously im lookin for some 4.88s if anyone knows of some i can pick up

It could be that the axle was swapped in from an xj. A High Pinion D30. In a high Pinion axle the Pinion sits above axle centerline.
