New guy... newbie questions(pics added)

Just picked up a 1997 TJ Wrangler. I have a few questions if you
guys don't mind. First is the 2.5 in this thing. Feels very anemic. Are
there any easy, proven power increasers for this engine? Have thought
about the new intake, and perhaps a header, but I figured I should
ask some people who know first.
Second, what kind of mileage are you guys getting. Talking to a guy
with a 4.0 and he is getting 19mpg where I am only getting 17. Seems
odd to me.

Third, anybody want to buy some aluminum wheels with Pro-Comp
tires? These are too big for my needs, and I want something a
little less flashy.

I just bought an owners manual off of eBay, and will see if I can
get some pictures of my new ride up. Hope to become somewhat
of a regular around here. Maybe just a lurker, as opposed to a poster
however. I don't have much input to add yet, as I have only had
it for about 2 weeks now.

if it has larger tires that will affect performance if it was never regeared to match...what size tires? and if you know: what is the gearing?

headers and intake and Computer chip will help street performance from what others have posted...I have a 4.0 so I couldn't tell ya.

Welcome Aboard!

Yah, the 4 bangers aren't going to tear up the quarter mile but if you're downsizing your tires you should get a bit more out of it. Kind of a no-brainer but make sure it's tuned up as well. With most mods you're not going to see huge gains in hp and torque but every little bit helps. Just don't throw all your money into gimmicky mods and you'll be alright.

As far as mileage... distance on a tank can vary greatly. If you're not mashing the pedal down constantly (like I did right off the bat thinking I could get every ounce of acceleration out of the little guy I could) you should be able to get atleast as good as the I6. I just got back from visiting family yesterday and with extreme winds and Interstate travel at 80 mph I only got around 180 on the tank. On other trips I've gone close to 250. It just depends on a lot of stuff. I've never actually calculated mine but probably will at some point.

Just my .02

Wow, 3 replies already. More than most forums nowadays.
Thanks for the info so far... your sig mentions free mods... there a
free mod section somewhere, or should I just search?

No perf mods. just little tricks and tips that people have posted here to make the Jeep more user friendly. There was a big post a while back that included door strap tips and mirror tips and a whole bunch of stuff. A quick search oughtta turn it up for you. The only thing i've done on mine so far is the requisite K&N filter. Obviously no huge hp gains but I have their filters on all my vehicles and like them a lot. I don't know how efficient the stock exhaust is but there are a lot of good catback systems out there that might help free up 1 0r 2 ponies.

Don't get too worried about the "leasurely" pace of the 2.5. I find it actually kind of nice not feeling like everyone's trying to race me at stoplights (my other vehicles are modified Mustangs). The only time it gets annoying is when climbing a steep hill with traffic behind you.

No worries.

Here are the photos. I guess the best way to sell wheels and tires
is to put a sign in the window as I am driving around or something...

Heh, I thought I recognized your username. What a small world, eh? My first thought was... "I wonder if that is the rainmn from Maxxtraxx"

As for the license plate thing... thousands of people everyday see
my license plate. I never really understood the blurring of plates.
Seems silly to me. I guess if I had some sort of high end car, and
was worried about it being stolen... then maybe, but otherwise, I
am not worried. If anyone wants my name or address, all they have
to do is ask me.

Funny how much smaller the web makes the world, isn't it?
Congrats on the Jeep, by the way. I just got this one a few months ago.
