Neutral safety switch?

basic run down: problem, I have no reverse lights.
it's on a 97 TJ 4.0l, 32rh trans 3speed auto.
starts fine in park & neutral, also detents in gear selector & gates on shift lever on trans line up perfect. Reverse lights work when switch is jumped
before I tear it out for no reason, it has to be the switch right? only thing left.......

Does the Reverse light come on either just before or after the the Reverse position? If so, it's possible the shifter cable is very slightly out of adjustment. Otherwise you could have a bad NSS, bad Reverse light wiring, blown fuse, or bad Reverse switch in the transmission.

Hey, thanks for the reply anywho, the fuse is good. the light " sometimes" come on, but then a breeze blows and they go back out. They come on hit or miss at best. Wiring has never been messed with & like I say, if the NNS is by passed they seem to function normally. May have just received a bad NNS, the original one was just swapped out for this new one about 6 months ago & everything worked great until the other day.

Based on that I would narrow my list of suspects down to two... the shifter cable is slightly out of adjustment (more likely) or the NSS switch is going bad (less likely).

The cable could be THAT fussy? I only have like one tooth on the adjustment that seems to be a sweet spot. and thats touchy too......

turns out it was the switch, replaced it and all is well. Replaced the T-case switch also & now all lights work again
