In Need of Help for Re-Gearing

I have an '03 Wrangler with stock 3:73 gearing right now. I have 33's and a 4in. lift and am getting around 13 miles to the gallon. I want to put less strain on my engine and gear lower to gain some of my power back but not at the cost of mpg. Would 4:56 be too low to and destroy my fuel economy more?? Would 4:10 gearing be better and still get the best of both worlds??
I would like to improve my mpg as well as gain more power if I geared lower. I am lost, please help me out.

I had 3.07s and regeared to 4.56 the first month I owned my jeep. I was (still am) running 33's w/ a 4" lift. It was a huge difference and I think it was perfect. 4.10's will probably give you better mileage but I'm very happy with the 4.56's

If you want economy, and don't plan on going larger than 33's then 4.10s will suit you fine. 4.56's with 33's will give you better performance, yet the fuel milage will be pretty bad. Right now I'm running 4.56's with 35's and getting an average of about 18-19 MPG (believe it or not) I have a lot of other stuff done too though.

I was thinkin about regearing to 4.56 instead of doin a axle swap with 4.10s. Would my gas mileage be better with 35s instead of 33

Sweet, thanks so much for the input guys. So if I regear to 4.10 how much better do you think my mileage will be? I'm not looking for a groundbreaking difference, but would you say I would get bumped up a couple miles to the gallon? Maybe like 15?

I get 16 mpg with 33s and 4.56s on my 01 5-speed. Mileage diff between 4.10s and 4.56s is not gonna be much. 4.56s have much better performance.

Exactly how much strain is being put on my engine though keeping it at 3.73?? Is it extreme? Will it eventually result in engine failure and mechanical problems in a couple years?? I got a quote at my local 4x4 shop for regearing front and rear to 4.56 (they shot down the idea instantly of 4.10 gearing and said it was useless) and it was around $1400-$1500.

I want my jeep to last long and I dunno how serious regearing is for the sake of the engine..

Cant believe people still go by MPG.. i go by FPG (Fun Per Gallon)

Right now i get like 11-12 FPG (City driving only)

Just accept the fact that its a jeep.. it aint gonna get good gas mileage.. EVER. As for gear ratio choice.. 95% of people are going to tell you 4.56's for 33's. Dont go 4.10's.. rubicons are geared to 4.10 for 31" tires. Shows you 33's should be 4.56

I know my mileage will never be great, but my last post was concerning my engine and 3.73 gears I have right now. I just need to know how serious it is have stock gearing and if my engine will eventually lead to problems with it pulling the 33s I have on right now.

I'm also looking to replace my stock gears. I have 33s on a stock suspension jeep. 2.5 liter engine. Stock 5 speed and 4.10 gears. Problem now is it is somewhat weak in 4th gear and incredibly weak in 5th gear. I've been told that a 4.88 gear swap would be better a better choice than 4.56. I too want to keep decent mpg, since it is a daily driver and the majority of the time I am on paved roads. Any thoughts? Thanks for bringing up the topic. I posted this in a different thread but I don't think anyone is reading that one anymore.

the engine strain isnt going to hurt anything but MPG. you need 4.56's for your tires and tranny.
