Mystery Hole

I am replacing the wheel flares on my 98 TJ and when I removed the pieces behind the front flares (which I wasn't planning on reinstalling) there is a roughly 1 inch hole in the rocker covered with clear tape. There is a hole with tape on both sides. Any ideas what this is for? Leave the tape, remove the tape, or reinstall the pieces? Thanks.

I cover mine with rocker guard tape or guards.

I have no idea why it's there but I just took the sliders off of my 2005 LJ to be powder coated and I had the exact same hole with tape over it.

Probably used to set the tub on the frame at the factory.

I believe the consensus in past discussions was it was how the tub is held on the assembly line.

I got them too.

Go down and find a rubber chassis plug, or any kind of rubber plug. Would look better than tape or leaving open.

Edit, maybe it's a belly button, one on both sides.

I kinda like the belly button idea. I'm just glad that apparently, like a belly button, everyone has them and it's not just my Jeep.

Like TJs are born and have parents. And we adopt them.
