Look for rust and dents underneath.
He might want to hold out for a 4.0L if possible. Other than that, looks good. May want to find out if that's a body lift or not, if it is it would be a good idea to replace it with a 1" instead of 2". |

He will DEFINATELY want to hold off for a 4.0L. If you cant find a TJ with a 4.0L, YJ's years 1991+ have 4.0L's in them.
I seriously feel a little under powered even with my 4.0L with proper gearing for 33" tires.. (4.56)

Hi, this is the thread my buddy had posted for me. I am planning on using it as a DD and some offroad trails but nothing to extreme. The 2 inch lift is a Budget boost so no springs or any of that. Is this something to be worried about. Will things start wearing out? Also what would be wrong with the 4 cyl. Again i dont need a whole lot of power. Is the 4 cyl engine reliable? I know theres an engine by jeep that is claimed to be bulletproof, is this it? Thanks

I have 130K on my 4cyl and knocking on wood no problems with the engine yet, many go for well over 200K.
Most folks on this forum are into putting very large Mud Terrain tires on, adding the extra weight of armor/winches, more and then going hardcore off roading, etc and for these purposes the little 4cyl is not up to the task. However for the average Jeep user's usage, as a DD and occasional forest roads, with pretty much a Jeep kept in stock condition the 4 cyl is fine. The majority of Jeeps out there in the real world, even TJ's, have very little modifications done to them. Then again many folks buy a Jeep with no intention of doing anything besides the norm with it and then get hooked... since you are already on a Jeep forum and haven't even bought a Jeep yet... well it doesn't look good for you! ![]() I consider my little 4 banger a cost savings device, because if I had a 6 I would lift it more, put bigger tires, tweak the engine, etc but I have learned to live with what I have and as much money as I already dump into the Jeep my wife is happy about that.

The 4 cyl. is pretty bulletproof (knock on wood). I think if I did it again I would go for a 6, but like mentioned above my plans would be revolving around bigger lift and tires than I plan on for the 4 banger.
If you want to go over 31 inch tires, I believe the 6 is a better starting point, but the 4 cyl. is reliable, incredibly easy to work on, and 20 mpg hasn't been a problem and I still don't have mine tuned exactly the way I want it.

Go out and drive a 4 cyl and then a 6 cyl. The 4 cyl I first drove I couldn't stand. Granted, the 6 isn't a speed demon, but there is a difference. From what I hear, there isn't really that much fuel savings involved with the 4cyl. Again, that's heresay as I went with the 6 in both TJ's I've had.
It all boils down to personal preference. If the 4 is fine for you, then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks - after all, it will be YOUR Jeep, not ours! Oh, and welcome! But BEWARE! Jeeps are an addiction the even the Betty Ford clinic cannot cure! Once you get a little taste, you'll be HOOKED!

I agree that there is a major difference on the road. I am a throttle jockey on the road and a 4 banger doesn't fit in with my personality. It is a good engine, but I like the take off of the 6 cyl. Like stated earlier, a Jeep is a personal thing so everyone has their own opinion on things. I have both and prefer the 4.0. I bought the 4 cyl used and am having to diagnose the problems I am having, but have several friends that have them and love them.

My buddy owned a 4 cylinder and was on 33's for a few years and didn't have huge complaints about it. If you go into it understanding it won't be fast or pick up quick, you'll be ok with it. |

It is only spacers i think he said. Is that bad? I think i would be fine with the 4 cylinder. How much gas mileage would i lose if i went with a six cylinder

I think there's probably too many variables that could seriously affect how big of a difference you'd see between the 4 and 6. Meaning, it will vary wildly from Jeep to Jeep, depending on options and add-ons/upgrades. Assuming all stock, same small factory tires, I'd guess 2-4 MPG max difference. On my '05, which was all stock down to the small goodyears it came from factory with and the auto tranny/overdrive, I could get 20 out of it. I'd doubt a 4 cyl with the same configuration would get much more than 20-22, but I could be wrong.
Be careful about discussing MPG too much though... someone will point out you're driving an off-road vehicle that is shaped like a brick, and you will be advised to buy a small car if you want fuel economy. ![]() ![]()

I had the chance to drive a 4cyl on a jeep adventure trip while away from home. Besides being a 4cyl and auto (I've got the 6 and man. Sport) the seats were really poor. It wasn't as confortable to drive. Mind you changing out seats wouldn't be that hard.

thanks a lot. Yeah im not to concerned with gas mileage. But how will the spacers effect the jeep. will it cause problems down the road? He said it was put in in the spring and hes put 4000 miles on it since. Thanks guys your a big help.
