Monster Frustration!
Hey Guys,
so i am taking apart my NP231 TC to put in the new rear shaft for the new driveshaft. I got the driveshafts off fine, i removed the yokes easily. the rear housing was a pain, but it is now off. I started to remove the 15mm bolts so i could take of the rear part of the TC when I got to a 11mm bolt (or at least i thought it was.) so I ended up rounding it off with the impact wrench and tried for an hour to get vice grips etc on it to make it budge.....no luck. I then used a dremel and cut a big slot in it to try and get a monster screwdriver in there and that didn't work out to well (dumb plan to begin with). so now i am at my wits end with a 10mm round head bolt with a standard head that won't budge. Anyone have any other ideas for removing this little guy??? P.S. I soaked it in PB Blaster for a few hours while doing this. I tried hammering the bolt to loosen it up. I also tried heating it up.

I'm not sure what bolt you are talking about since I have not taken my TC apart. However, I would strongly recommend a bolt-out set. I have a craftsman set and it works GREAT!!! It has saved me several times.

About all you can do now if you can't get to it enough to cut the bolthead off is to remove the t-case and then cut the bolt head off. Typically a 12-pt. 10mm socket is used to get that top bolt out if that's the one that got boogered up.

If you have a dremel tool and IF there's room you could always try to grind down the sides in an attemp to make a 10mm or so socket fit.
Just a thought... |

The reason I was asking if that was the one is I have run across one or two that have a nut on the backside as well as being threaded through the case half. Take the nut off and the bolt comes right out.

i didn't see a nut on the back but i think i'll go ahead and try and cut the head of with the dremel and hopefully i cut it flush.
is the TC aluminum? if so it probably wouldn't be a good idea trying to pry the case off if i didn't cut the head completely off right? |

Not sure how much room you got, but could you tack weld a nut on to the end of the rounded head?

I broke a bolt on my CJ transfer case. Like previously stated, I ground it, pulled the case apart and was left with a nub but not matter what I tried I still couldn't get it off using the nub. I ended up grinding it flat and leaving it out. If you really want a bolt in there and can't get it out, you'll have to drill it and retap it. I just siliconed it up, and tightened the remaining bolts, no leaks. Good luck! It's not as bad as you think.

Since you already cut a slit in the bolt head, go to the nearest tool store and buy an impact-driver. This little tool works wonders sometimes.

strange as it sounds, I had a hell of a time getting my t/c fluid fill plug out. Tried all sorts of things, it wouldnt budge. Last ditch effort I actually tried to TIGHTEN it. Tightening it was all I needed to break the threads loose and then it came out like a charm! Try it!
