These are still undergoing intensive testing, installl training videos shoots with hot models choreographed to music and packaged in a pretty box but yes, they still have the dog kennel tarp look with the large brass grommets and ball bungees holding it on. Can you find a size that fits perfectly?, if not you'll have to start sewing and get a grommet tool.
If you get sick of rammen noodles everyday, try Kraft macaroni and cheese, a long time staple at college dorms.

Now that is when you know a thread has ran out of purpose. This thread got so big that you just posted a link to an earlier page from the post in which you were posting. I have never, in all my years of internet forums, seen that happen. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Which is why the top needs to be changed, or someone else needs to make it.

30 pages now, all the complaining, and the supposed "improvements"; but all I still see is something that resembles a tarp more than a sunscreen top for a Jeep. Still the nasty looking grommets and one odd out of place grommet in the back at that. Still doesn't follow the lines of the roll bar well. I don't see it getting better any time soon if at all, so I'm done here. Got something else instead. Too bad, because I liked the idea of a safari top and not needing a header.

Too little time

It's been the third weekend that I have used mine, and I still really like it. It does it's job to keep the sun off, was easy to install, and it's quiet and works. It's worth the $60.

Everyone keeps on saying there is an extra grommet in back. I use that grommet to secure to the rear of my roll cage when it covers the entire top and I use that grommet to secure to the front when I fold it in half. Realizing I have an after-market cage, I still use that grommet, so don't take it out!!! I am glad the Spiderweb covers different types of cages. I do agree that it could be a little wider though. And the black grommets sound like a good idea too. Overall, I think this is an excellent product and NO HEADER to mess with! I was very grateful for that last weekend when I was caught in the rain with my top down!

I just came back from harbor freight.
You can make one of these tops in about an hour for under 30. you will have enough to make two maybe three of them. Make three sell two keep one, but your self lunch! Sorry Spider web. You're going to have to up the ante to keep selling these to real jeepers. ![]()

Thanks for the replies on my homemade version, Here is an update on its use. We just took a 2 1/2 hour trip with the girls on Sat and it was to say the least great. No sunscreen needed, with the sidescreens on the girls even took a nap on the highway. Conversations and cell phone use, no problem. It takes about 2 minutes to install top and sides. It rained and I pulled the top up and had to put on the side windows and roll the rear down (without having to remove anything first). At highway speeds there is a very noticeable reduction in top flapping noise. In fact it hardly flaps at all now. It is not as quiet as the hardtop, but makes it more comfortable on your ears for sure. I have the tinted windows so I roll the mesh sides up and flip the rear drop down up and over and bungee it up close to the soundbar. There is very little reduction in visibility with it all in place and the top down. With the top up and reconfigured it is the same as factory. Maybe spiderweb will add some optional side curtains for those who may like them. Even with the doors off it really helps in the back. You do not even notice much of an enclosed feeling, just no sunburn or overheated head. The feed back from others when they view it are how much cooler it is underneath, big difference. Oh yeah, It stops bird crap from landing inside to! (the girls have bird feeders...). I have not used the spiderweb version, but would probably like it to fit closer to the rollbars as has been mentioned.
This winter when I install the hardtop I am going to leave the sunscreen on and throw a moving blanket on top before setting the top in place. I think there should be enough ventilation to keep moisture from being an issue and will buffer the cold and sound a little (not that it is any problem, just going to see how it works). You can make your own, but for spiderwebs price it is a good value. There is a lot involved with purchasing the shade material, grommets and bungees then cutting the correct size to fold, sew and install the grommets (the material is not real easy to fold neatly). Not that it is some herculean task; but it takes time and resources. And for Spiderweb, he needs to make a buck. I do not think any one of use wants to work for free. His product should provide the same benefits as my version. This has been one of the most daily useful additions I have added to my TJ. And I think I am going to take some advise from forum members and spray the grommets bumper black. I never noticed them until it was mentioned and now I see them all the time. .

I have followed this thread from it's inception, and yes I purchased the SW2 about a month ago. Yes, it's the same material used for "tarps" as some call it. Yes, it has grommets. Yes, it uses bungee balls to secure it. So, if it's so easy to manufacture and improve- Why the heck haven't any of you done it? ![]() If you don't like the man's product, fine, don't purchase it. Leave it be. I for one couldn't be happier with mine. It does what it's supposed to do- Goes on easy, keeps the Texas sun from scorching me, yet still lets the breeze in. We drive Jeeps, not some fancy little sports car, so if the lines don't match the roll bar, so what. I have had several Jeepers ask me where I purchased this, and I gladly pointed them to the website. In my opinion, it was worth the $60 I spent. OK- I'm done ranting. |

![]() Like I said, I have been running this top (SW2) all summer and have no complaints. He is not Bestop and does not have R&D department and plenty of $$ to do thousands of prototypes. What he has deivered is a good, functional product. Not to everyone's tastes (as you can see in the length of this thread) Before I considered buying the SW2, I thought about going down to HF and picking up the materials and doing it myself. Then I asked myself, "Why would I do that?" IMO, it would be a big hassle. I can't speak for Chris, but I think he appreciates the constructive feedback. That is why he is prototyping SW3. The suggestions are great and Chris is taking them and trying to make a better product. He has a good product and provides good service? Support your fellow Jeeper. |
