Mercedes Diesel in a TJ

Has anyone considered installing one of the 5 cylinder turbo charged Benz diesels in a TJ? Just curious.

There is an engineering student at the university I attend that has a mercedes diesel in his yj. Can't help you more than to tell you it can be done though. I'll try to get some details.

One dream of mine is to put the 3.0 CRD into a CJ 7.

Hmmm I wonder if I should swap the 5cyl from our 1978 300D.... A whopping 70hp but I can't remember the torque.

Not much TQ! I got one of those cars stuck in a pot hole in front of my work and had to rock it out using R and D.

We usually have to slam the shifter to put it in D. The belts squeak so bad you can talk to it! That car is such a POS

I don't know if he's on here, but I met a guy in california who had a mercedes diesel in his yj. He had it converted to running off of canola oil. Smelled like french fries! lol
Was pretty cool, it seemed to have plenty of power. He ran it on diesel fuel to start the jeep and flipped a switch to cruise around on canola oil. He claimed 60 miles per gallon in his wrangler. I'd like to look into this someday as well. SO if anyone knows of any swaps on here please post.

I had a Mercedes with a 5 cyl turbo diesel, it was a 1980 300SD. I got blasted for saying this before but I will say it again, don’t do it. The other post just seemed to end. One person who stared doing the swap with that Mercedes motor ended up swapping in another, the other person just stopped posting after he seemed to be close to getting it down. You will be very disappointed with this swap if you do it.

I drove a Mercedes with that motor for a few years and over 100,000 miles. It is not a good choice for this type of swap. If you are doing it in order to get better mileage it will be less money to just to go buy a another car that will get better mileage. If you are buying it because you think that this diesel will give you more torque or low end power think again.

Just do the 4bt and be done with it. Plenty of write ups and more power.

Cummins B3.3

We've got two local TJ's in our club with these. They are perfect for the TJ. Lighter than a 4bt, 30mpg on the road if geared right, and they have been problem-free.

Use a BlueTech out of a one-ton Dodge dually. Plenty of torque!!
