I can't wait! There's something incredibly satisfying about making something yourself.
Great job; human beings are not meant to be specialists. We should be able to weld, program computers, butcher meat, shoot a gun, criticize literature, fix a car, balance a budget, paint a house, quote the Constitution, market a product, build a shed, tan leather, understand a contract, make speeches, etc., etc.

The more you can do yourself, the greater your chances of being successful.

I am on a similar track right now myself - finishing a Master's Degree and hand casting handgun bullets from scap lead in my spare time. My sons are currently prepping for a spring vegetable garden. They're throwing a recession; we aren't participating.

I'm going to be finishing the windows tonight. Hopefully I can do the entire top portion tomorrow. Anybody think they'd want to trade a Safari top and header channel for a pair of the windows? I can always make an extra set I'll even customize the thread color to match your jeep. Yellow jeep + yellow thread would look pretty damn nice

*Update*

I finished the windows last night and stuck them in this morning. If you guys are thinking about doing this, I HIGHLY suggest some type of anti-fray gel for the ends. Polypro frays like a mofo and will break them down. The stuff I got is almost like superglue.

I love how they turned out so far. The dark green thread is really subtle unless you're up close. I can't wait to get to work on the top portion now!

Here are some pics:

Great job. I bought a pair of window nets used and need to make the rear. I have a industrial sewing machine but was looking to find the material. Here is a site that I found ... http://www.buyhookandloop.com/Webbing_Products.asp
Now I have to find the time...

If I were you I'd check out this place:

http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Country-Brook-Design__W0QQ_armrsZ1

They were AWESOME. VERY cheap (cheapest I found), almost half the price of that site and really fast shipping.

Where did you get your anti-fray glue, what kind is it? How did you apply it? What about dipping them in wax or something, I guess the wax might not stay on hot days. Also, did you go with the heavy polypro or the regular stuff?

Why not just run a lighter over the ends instead of messing with glue?

That's what I was thinking, just burn the ends and be done with it.

Great job on the nets though, they look very professional.

It catches on fire really easily and then you have to put it out. If you don't get it hot enough to almost catch on fire, it doesn't melt back far enough to stop the fraying.

The best way to do it is cut it to length with a hot knife that cuts and melts at the same time.

I see, never worked with that specific stuff, lighter always worked fine with any of the ropes on the boat and what not so I figured it would work on this stuff well too. Thanks for the info mrblaine

The lighter trick or butane torch for that matter works well with nylon and the heavy weave polypro. The lighter weight stuff is just a pain to stop the fraying on without a hot knife.

I used to own and run a shop making truck tarps, big industrial nets, trampoline repair and tent repair in another life.

i do the lighter trick, or use a heat gun. once you do it a bunch of times you get the hang of it.

nice work, those nets look great!

You can also clamp down close to the end with a pair of needle nose, and let it burn back to the needle nose. That usually lets the material melt enough then put itself out leaving a nice clean edge.

Great job man,

I have been thinking of doing the same thing except using an old cargo net out of a C-130. Great work.
