I'm going to try to see if installing the cooler and a big bore gear box will give any more power to turn the big tires when they are between a rock and a hard place. I also have to bore out my stock pump a little. If that's still not enough, I'll have to get medieval on it and go hydro assist.
the buggy i ran it on, it was simple bolt on deal.
i was running a 2001 xj motor in it.
i would think the tj mounting bracket has the same pattern.
sure looks like its the same!
you need the wj reservoir, and pump.
you will need a larger return line also
the wj pump is a slightly higher psi pump.
the wj has a hydro fan clutch, as well as hydro steer.
i also did all the west texas off road mods to it.
a stock tj steering box might not like the higher psi for long!
the wj pump has 2 returns lines, one big, one small.
i capped the small one, and used the big one, with a larger size hose.
the wj pump ran my full hydro steering very well.
a stock xj pump would not do it.
psc stuff, is way better, and the way to go!
unfortunately, psc was not in my budget.
my buggy was an old beater, it got parts to match!
Blaine, and I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I saw Dakota in Big Bear over the weekend & he mentioned you/PSC had some kind of a new PS gearbox design that was recently installed on his TJ. He said it had a new benefit/feature that sounded pretty awesome... having to do with ratio, steering rate, or similar that I hesitate in trying to paraphrase how I heard it.
Is it worth a new thread to hear about more about it?
personally i think a new gearbox option is needed in our market.
that is assuming the price is not crazy high, like other "non stock" gear box options.
Regarding PS pumps and a big bore box (like the PSC for example) can one expect any improvement in steering force using only a big bore box and no pump mods/upgrades?
All other things being equal, yes because the bore is larger so it has the ability to have more output power to the pitman arm. It also has the capacity to slow down steering response because the flow needs to be higher to keep up with the larger piston.
A call from Blaine about the PSC steering box naturally caused me to spend about an hour looking at Google images of what he was talking about. There are about a bazilion more parts inside a Saginaw steering box than I expected there would be.
Well Jerry, if you dive in to one make sure you keep the stack in order (something a wise mentor reminded me after I grenaded a motorcycle transmission that I had recently "rebuilt")....
Ya. I get it aint cheap or easy.
Bottom line, most jeep guys aint got a grand to drop on a gear box.
thats why most jeeps have a reman factory box, or durango box.
im not a durango box fan.
what about a box from a cummins dodge?
I just assume its stronger?
Im not against adapting my frame for saginaw box.
