I know this is a known problem and this thread has been beaten to death...so I did my research before buying the hose and before posting this.
Through my research I found that going to an aftermarket supplier for radiator hoses on a TJ only leaves you with hoses that don't fit. So I called the dealer, gave them my VIN and they got me the hoses.
Well the upper hose was correct but the lower hose was way too long.
I called back and they guy said based upon my VIN he ordered the correct number...so he's ordering me another one on the assumption that the first one was mispackaged.
I shouldn't have to cut the hose and the coil inside to make an OEM hose ordered based upon my VIN to work right?
I looked on here for OEM part numbers and the only ones I could find I was told aren't correct.

When I replaced the radiator in my '00 I ran into a similar problem. The part number all the parts houses had gave me a hose that was too short. I had one guy even ask me if I was sure I had the right hose when I had it sitting on his counter. There is a year break where the lower hose was changed but the parts houses haven't figured it out. I was able to get the right hose with no problem at the dealer.
No you shouldn't have to cut off the hose to make it fit but at least you have that option. Have you ever tried to stretch one of those hoses four inches?

Took the old hoses with me to NAPA. THey looked up on the computer and had the wrong ones listed. He took my hose in the back and matched it up. Can't remember off hand what the part number was.

Yes, that is exactly the part number I got...so I'm gonna call the other dealer down the street to see if they have it in stock...if so I'll go pick it up.
Chrylser superseded the part#. The number they are selling you is for an 05-06 hose. It's the only hose available. It may not match the original but the question is will it fit?
I would give it a shot myself. Also just to let you know the old part# cost half the price of the new which would make sense to me considering it is larger.
Well I went down street to the other dealer in town and they had no clue as to why mine was shorter. So I went to Advance Auto Parts and the one they showed and had in stock was almost identical to mine, but just a tad longer...so I think I'm going to cut the Advance one and transfer the coil over since the bends are the same in the Advance one. The bends in the OEM one aren't even totally the same as the one I removed from my Jeep

The hose that fits perfect on a '97-'99 is Gates 22283. The listing says it is for a Right-Hand drive vehicle (Postal Truck).
If your lower hose attaches to the far left bottom side on the radiator, it works like it is supposed to.
My '99 is a Left-Hand drive vehicle. When it was being built they must have put the wrong radiator and hose on it (Postal Vehicle). A Left-Hand drive radiator has a center inlet/outlet with the longer hose.
Apparently others have run into the same problem and never figured it out and cut off hoses and made them work.
This new Gates hose does not have a spring as they are no longer needed with the new rubber compound being used today.
I hope this will help others when replacing the lower hose.
It's not possible to put the wrong radiator on it without interfering with the steering gear/shaft due to the difference in the radiator mounting brackets.
Incidently RHD upper hoses cannot be bought anywhere. I have a LHD upper hose on my RHD but due to the bends in the hose it needs 1 3/8 inches trimmed from the radiator end to line up properly.
I have no idea how or why it has happened. I'll be doing some work shortly which may require the radiator removed, and since I've had a minor leak from the lower hose in the past I've bought a new one to have ready. I've bought it from a UK supplier but it's different slightly to the one I've got fitted and looks like it's for a LHD TJ. The offset between LHD and RHD radiators is only about two inches, but I don't see how a RHD hose would fit a LHD rad or vise-versa without having some strain on the hose. It may fit but I doubt it would be perfect.
Your statement "A Left-Hand drive radiator has a center inlet/outlet with the longer hose" is incorrect, the radiators are identical aside from the different offset on the brackets to clear the steering components on the different versions. Your LHD rad should have wider mounting brackets on the left side of the radiator.
Thank you for clearing up the location of the lower inlet/outlet hose. The hose I purchased is an EXACT fit with no strain whatsoever. It is a perfect match...........Go figure!!!!
