i have a 2001 jeep wrangler with 35" tires and my steering wheel has a ton of play in it meaning when i turn the wheel a quarter turn i barley start turning in the direction i turned. Is there anything i can do to fix this?
You can adjust the the steering box to take out some of the slop. Be careful when adjusting it. A little turn does a lot when adjusting. You still want a little bit of play. There are other threads here with links for the steps to adjust. Inspect the steering components. You may want to have a friend turn the steering wheel while you look at the steering components. That way you can identify if it's the steering box that has the slop or another part of the system.
Had play in mine and I adjusted the steering box and also replaced my tire rod (bent) and replaced the TRE's. Replacing the TRE's and tie rod made a huge difference.

You guys might have put the cart before the horse...
FIRST, he needs to identify where the play is.
Ball joints, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, bent and flexing drag link or tie rod, loose track bar, steering arm, steering box, where the column shaft fits the shaft on the top of the steering box, steering column shaft joints, etc - And most likely a combination of some of these.
The LAST thing to do is start cranking down on the steering gear lash adjustment bolt.
I had that same problem, and it was the upper steering shaft. The joint on it rusted out and had actually snapped on one side. It look like a mini u-Joint, for reference.
It also might help to further the info in your profile. What type of suspension do you have allowing these 35" tires! Do you have a susp. lift and or a body lift? or both?
i just bought my jeep like a month and a half ago this is my first jeep and first car ive owned but i bought it lifted so i still dont know what kind of lift it is i have 35's on it but i can easily fit 37 and the guy at my local shop told me i can probably fit 40's but im pretty sure i either have a 4" lift wit 2 inch body lift or a 6" lift all together i can take some pictures and post them if anyone would mind helpin me out
Well it's sure a lot of lift. (Compare to the pics of my setup in my gallery)
First off, lose the body lift. Your self respect will improve tenfold!
The spring spacers are probably fine.
What kind of swaybar end links to you have? The one I can see looks like it hasn't been connected (due to all the rust on the ends) in quite some time. If the driver's side is disconnected (or broken) as well, enough body roll on the street will make it feel like there's play in the steering.
i dont even know where the body lift is to be totally honest im a total newbie so if someone could point me in that direction that would be great cuz i do wanna make its lower for the vertically challenged
Take a good look at the u-joints on the steering shaft. There are three total. I just found out one of them was my last source of slop. I replaces a lot of other worn parts before finding it. I had slop in the rod ends, steering box, and one wheel bearing to begin with. Good luck.

That said I would be interested in hearing what he ended up doing. I see a lot of silly stuff like that on a local facebook forum which makes me bite my tongue.
His profile says he has a 2002, maybe he got rid of the '01?
