Lost transmission fluid while driving, please help!

Hello
The other night I was drive up town when the transmission line on my 05 Wrangler popped off the bottom of my radiator. Judging by the trail of fluid left on the road I lost any drive immediately because the trail started less then 50 yards from the point where I ended up stopping. Anyhow I ran down to the gas station and bought a house clamp and some ATF, fixed the hose and put the fluid in and it drove again.

The next night however it was extremely cold and when I started it the transmission would not shift into drive. After I let it warm up for about 5 minutes it finally shift into drive and I checked the fluid level and noticed that I over filled the transmission.

My question is does it sound like I did damage to my transmission. thanks

Did you put the correct fluid in there, ATF4?

This. Don't worry about the overfilling. Lots of us overfill our 42RLEs by a full quart to prevent fluid starvation at odd angles on the trail.

One more question, how much fluid did you have to add ?

Or how low was it ?

Time for a rebuild. Sounds like you smoked the sealing rings on the forward clutch piston.

Maybe someone else will chime in, but 2qts for a very short period doesn't sound like you would have done any real damage.

Low fluid will act like yours. Top it off and you should be good.
