should be plugged into a little black box under there.

Look around, you should find a vacuum line it plugs into nearby.
The box is the vacuum accumulator.
I bet your heater ssytem doesnt switch from defrost to floor to vent....

If that tube is rubber and protruding out of the firewall under the battery box, it's the drain tube for water (condensation) that comes out of the a/c system.

Good point, but that's about 1/2" on mine, doesnt' resemble a vac line much.

You're gonna have to provide more information and/or photos of what you're talking about. I am still in the dark on what/where is broken/leaking/what the leak is that you found.

Has to be there. The little plastic box under the battery is the vacuum accumulator, and it connects to the vaccuum lines that come through the dash right by the battery, spit and go to the accumulator and across the firewall to the engine and cruise etc (on mine.) If your heat/defrost works at all, you have vacuum from the engine, so the line is around there somewhere.

Here's a pic but your 97 4cyl will not look like my 03 6cyl, but the vac line from the dash is in the yellow circle, it comes through that foam gasket, splits and goes under the battery and over to the engine and cruise.
