looking to get back in the saddle

It has been a long time since I posted, I sold my last Jeep last Summer(91 YJ) and I'm looking to come back into the fold.I'm looking to get the wife a TJ to use as a station car, she takes the train into NYC from Long Island for all you non NY'ers,
the station is less than a tenth of a mile from our house, I would also use the Jeep on snowy days(if we ever get any) and on the weekends and nice days in the summer.
I orginally said lets get a 97 4 banger = $3500=$4500, then quickly decided I dont really want another 4 banger ( had a 97 auto, dont ask)since I plan on keeping the next Jeep for a few years
Now I'm looking at 4.0's 97-99. I found a really nice 99 4.0 locally, hard/soft, A/C automatic, stock... problem is current owner says the previous owner did a lot of highway driving and replaced the 4.0 at 144k, it now has 4.0 with 88,000? I did a car fax it is clean. should I be worried about buying a Tj with a replacement engine?

I wouldn't worry about it so long as they maintained the second engine properly... though I worry about that since the first engine failed prematurely which indicates maybe they don't maintain their cars well at all. Only 144k miles is nothing for a properly maintained 4.0L engine and it shouldn't have failed nearly that soon.

So the Jeep itself has 232,000 miles on it? That's a lot. I would personally be concerned about buying that. Like Jerry said, if nothing was cared for properly, then the tranny, transfer case, and axles could all be on their last legs too.

Keep looking. There are plenty out there. You may save a few grand buying that high miler, but you can easily eat that up in other repairs. It would be another thing if he had all the maintenance records, but your'e buying a pig in a poke. A very old pig in a poke. A lot more than just the engine can break at that kind of mileage. Buy a southern or western TJ without all the rust. You'll be very glad when mod time comes.

She drives less than a tenth of a mile to the station??! I go that far to check my mail.

you guys are right I passed on it and found another 97 4.0 around here, this one has 125k, new exhuast manifold, radiator, 30" ravine wheels all service records for the past 2 years, now I just need the guy to come down in price.
