remember, that 2.5 is in its power band above 3000rpm.. its meant to do it.. change your oil when its due, other than that.. 4 bangers are meant to scream... its actually good for them... dont be afraid to drive it like a rental.. it will thank you for it. PS: make sure its maintained, and put the new timing chain in when it calls for it __________________ 2006 TJ SE - Does what I want it to do. I believe I put at least 2500 miles on it at WOT in 4th. I don't believe it hurt it much, but it soon just gave up at about 90K. It was a good jeep/engine and was ran hard it's entire life, so I believe it was "natural causes".. Ron Quote:

Junior Member | I have a 98 2.5 and the power band is from 2k to 3k any over 3k and the engine just screams with no apparent increase in power. I used to run mine past 3.5k on the highway to keep up with traffic but since having the engine blow and replacing it I try not go over 3k and to hell with keeping up in traffic, on the plus I can hear the radio now though. I don't know if running her over 3k blew the engine or not as when I swapped the engines it appeared that one of th exhaust manifold bolts was out and caught in the pipes right where the piston let go. I have 32's btw and stock gearing with a manual. she was pretty heavily run off road before I got her and maintenance was not something she had experienced; it's amazing what I know now and I should replace her with a 4.0 L that is newer and less beat up but I can't do it she's my precious. |

Registered User | You aren't going to hurt it. I bought a 17.5 ft I/O boat 11 years ago. My "tow rig" was a 1994 Toyota Extra Cab 4wd with the anemic 22RE 112 hp four banger. To hurt matters, the truck has 31's on it. Towing the boat on any grade requires a shift to 3rd to keep it at about 60-65. She is screaming at about 5k rpms. Back then, the truck had 30k miles on it. I told myself if the truck lasted another couple of years, I would upgrade. I still have it. It is still what I tow my boat with. I still rev it up tight on grades. It has 141k miles on it now. I wouldn't worry about reving a 4 banger Jeep up to 3-4k to make it up long grades. |

I had a 2wd 1985 toyota pick up with the 22re, 2 barrel, 4spd manual. That little thing would'nt die!!! The valves would float at 7200rpm, but it would just keep going. I knew a guy in college who had one in a lifted toyota on 33's. He added 10:1 pistons, a cam, and carb. That thing would run damn good!!! The 22re will last forever..... __________________ www.pghoffroad.com If it has tracks, tires or tits, its gonna cause a problem. Quote:
