Ok... I have an '04 TJ, stock axles (D30 & D44) that are both currently completely open. I want to put lockers/LSDs in, but am not sure which is better for my environment. I drive on a lot of snow, slush, and ice covered roads. I don't have the money to afford both, so I was wondering what was the most beneficial for On/Offroad use. I don't know how a lunchbox locker would be in the back, working all the time, so I was thinking maybe a TrueTrac in the back, Aussie up front? Any help & suggestions?

tru trac in rear would be ok in snow, a locker in the front would make it so you couldnt drive safely in 4wd on snow covered roads. arbs are about only way to get traction when you need it and leave them open in snow.

I lived in Buffaluv my first 28 years. Always ran (and still do) slipper in back and locker in front. I would rarly use 4wd unless conditions were severe and speeds slow. driving over 25/30 with the front locked can be a little exciting

IMHO Driving with Lockers in the snow is not nearly as big of deal as some make it sound... Even with open diffs you can get the back end to whip around. You just have to be smart about it. If you drive the Jeep like a Jeep and not rally it everywhere you should be fine.
I used to be a fan of selectable lockers until all my buddies at one time or another has had their ARB lockers fail on them for one reason or another (usually electrical reasons). Because of that I went Detroit fore and aft and havent looked back!

I have a TrueTrac in my rear diff and found that it works really well on slippery surfaces. In previous situations, when I put my foot down, with my open diff, the back would slide around, with the TrueTrac, it is just point and shoot, it seems to just grip and go.
I really like it, and if I was to regear, which means I would need a new carrier in the front, I would replace the open carrier with a TrueTrac.
Most of my Jeepin' is mud/gravel etc, not big wheels in the air stuff, so I find the TrueTrac works well for me.

I've never had an ARB fail? Run them in 4 different axles with 4 different ARB's. None of my friends have had a problem either...

Ive only seen airline issues, which I would blame on the installer not ARB. I have never seen the locker itself fail.

Hate to ask, but driving in 2wd, which would be preferred, an ARB in the back or a Truetrac in the back, for commuting on snowy, icy roads?

I haven't had mine very long, but I went with advice and reviews when I bought my ARBs. I am glad I went with them.

I wouldn't trade my locked rear end for a LSD off road. I like to be locked. But, up here in Michigan, it can get a little hairy being locked in slippery road conditions. I won't let my wife drive the jeep on the roads when it's slippery. If snow is your number one concern, then I don't think you can go wrong with a true-trac.
