I am looking to upgrade my gears to 4.10 for my 33's (d30 front/d44 rear) and have seen this term carrier break frequently.

Can I not just purchase and install 4.10 gears?

FYI...I plan on locking the rear at the same time.

Check it again.

Not quite correct. The Dana 44 carrier (case) break is 3.73 down, 3.92 up. This means that lowest gearing (highest numerically) you can use on rig currently geared with 3.07s is 3.73. To go to 3.92 (an odd gearset today) you'll need another carrier (case). The exception to this rule is Rubicon gears. If you currently have 3.73 (or anything higher- lower numerically like 3.07) gears and want to go to 4.10s, you can use a Rubicon 4.10 gear (or 4.56, 4.88) as it is a 'thick' gear designed to be used on the 3.73 down carrier.
