locker d44 or axles d30

i have a d44 in the rear and a d30 in the front, should i get a locker for the d44 first, or should i get upgraded axles in the d30 first. Which is the more convinient buy??

i would say that it would probably be better to lock the front first. jmo though...

I would lock the front before you upgraded the shafts too, you're just not likely to break a shaft without a locker.
Or just lock the rear like you're thinking.

Front d30 locked on 33s is pretty safe. I'd say you're good just locking either axle and not worrying about the shafts.

Well like Jeep02Apex said you're still pretty safe with stock shafts and 33's even if you're locked, I've had this setup for about a year now and its been to moab and seen some intense stuff but I haven't ever broken a shaft.

So- you're still not that likely to break a shaft even if you're locked, therefor it would be very difficult to break one if you weren't. That's why I wouldn't recommend spending the money on upgrading D30 shafts if you're not locked.

I would lock the rear and add some superior shafts. I would hold off on the front until you get a locker and stronger shafts at the same time.

If you decide to lock the front, I suggest getting a HP dana 30 from a Cherokee and putting the money and time into that axle. Its a little stonger than the low pinion dana 30 and they are plentiful and cheap at junkyards and it bolts right in.

that sounds perfect, i think im going to lock the rear for now and not worry about the axles, gotta make some more money first before i go crazy with it. also if i get a locker for 3:73, that locker will still work with 4:10s right???

I'm pretty sure the carrier break for the carrier in the d44 is 3.73/3.92, so it wouldn't work for 4.10's.

Sorry to hijack but can some please explain to me what carrier break is?

I am looking to upgrade my gears to 4.10 for my 33's (d30 front/d44 rear) and have seen this term carrier break frequently.

Can I not just purchase and install 4.10 gears?

FYI...I plan on locking the rear at the same time.

The carrier is waht the gears go on. It means you cant fit anything larger then a 393 gear on that carrier/locker. Some shops will install a locker for free when they do the gears since they are already in there. But the jump from 373 to 410 isnt worth it so save your money or go bigger.

Go to 4.56 if you are going to upgrade the gears for 33's. You'll be set for 35's as well with 4.56 just in case. 4.10's won't show you much improvement for the $$.

With a rear 44 you probably have LSD in it as well. If it were me, i'd probably upgrade the shafts in the front and rear and wait to add the lockers when you regear.
