anyway to make a this conversion with a lock? I want to do this but I made a wooden trunk that would go over the inside latches, so it's like your tonneu cover. I'm only asking because without a locking device the wooden trunk isn't thief proof

the latches i listed are lockable, and do a surprisingly good job of keeping you from pulling it apart... i tried lol

In addition to locking, I'll bet they don't rattle, which was my big fear. Thanks for a cool solution to both problems!

Are you able to close that tail gate latch without locking it, so it is latched but as soon as you unlatch it, it opens?

Reviving this thread because I just did this mod on my YJ

mounted them to 3/16" plate first, then welded that to the jeep

So yeah, tailgate was welded shut for a little while there

Closed & Locked:

Closed & unlocked:

So yeah, I realized about halfway to getting them attached that they pull 90 degrees to the direction the door pulls... they still hold the door shut, I can hang on it and it wont open, just like you did cgmrdc but mine don't sit flat when they're unlocked; possibly too much pressure from the tailgate gasket, not sure...

but it still doesn't work like a Tacoma's tailgate... you have to buckle & unbuckle each one.

I think this is the best option I've seen so far; much better than the bungee cord I was using!!

It could be that the mounting positions are too close together. When i did mine i measured with the latch closed thn moved them apart so there would be more tension... bc yeah, the latches arent techically designed to work the way they do for the tail gate.

hmm, yeah not a bad Idea; I was thinking about maybe flipping them, and putting the lock on the tub instead of the 'gate... we'll see if I get around to it this weekend

Also, still looking for that 'perfect' truck style tailgate latch; I'd like to be able *click* it shut with one hand and know it's locked/unlocked etc; It'd also be nice to be able to open it with one hand; toying with some ideas... if I figure something out I'll start a new thread

big jeep wave!

good idea. I may do this on my trailer w/ CJ tailgate...was wondering how i was going to latch that. do both use the same key? will the latches hold a good amount of weight hitting the tailgate from behind?

I was able to put my feet on the bumper and hang on it; all 220 lbs of me and they rotate a little, but stay buckled; I think they would break/stripout before they would let go; I'm amazed at how strong those little 4-40's are! I cut them to length with a pair of side cutters

Not sure about the key thing, I'll check tonight! Each buckle came with 2 keys, so I assumed they're keyed differently, but I didn't try it.
