Lock ring pliers for SYE install, lets make this final.

What's the absolute best Lock ring pliers for the job? I hear from harbor freight all the way up to MATCO/Snap-on from interchangeable to non-interchangeable.

I've heard the non-interchangeable head snap-on lock ring pliers that will open to at least 1" will be the best ones, can anybody confirm this?

Go to sears, look in the automotive tool section, pick up the biggest craftsman lock-ring pliers you can find. That was all I needed to do the job, as there were only 2 lock rings to remove from the main-shaft of the NP-231. Plus if you break them, just take them back and get a new set.

Edit: The non-interchangeable heads are the strongest, and work the best.

I've never seen interchangeable head lock ring pliers, do you have a link to some?

Mr. Blaine, they have interchangeable heads for snap-ring pliers, but not lock-ring pliers.

I sorta knew that, thus my question.

Biggest pain for my SYE install was finding a good pair of snap ring pliers.

Hence why i'm asking, I don't feel like spending all day while my jeep is apart playing trial and error finding the right ones.

You just explained my whole SYE install, wish I'd asked first. Went to 4 or 5 stores looking for pliers. Actually bought 2 different sets and tried 3. Just barely got the last set to work. All this while my jeep is apart. A good pair pays for itself on a SYE install. Hope yours goes better than mine man.

My lock ring plier set has different sizes. I can open up rings out to 4-5". They are S&K brand.

I got mine from Powerbuilt (because they had a sale on it) and I don't know if they are the best. But that snap ring is going to suck to remove no matter what

The compounded pliers look like they will do the job. It also look like they will open nice and wide too. I think I might go with those, thanks!

The key thing you need is that they open extra-wide. I couldn't find any that opened widely enough until I happened to find a Snap-On truck & he had what I needed.
