Lock ring pliers and SYE?
I am trying my own install of the Teraflex SYE and was wondering what tools I will need ahead of time. I know I need lock ring pliers, which ones and where should I get them? I also see a set of snap ring pliers in some installs...are these necessary? I know the lock ring pliers are highly recommended. I am new to this, and don't want to have to go buy tools once started. My buddies have alot of common tools but neither of these pliers. Will I be ok w/ out snap ring pliers? Please recommend the right tools and where to get them. Thank you
Demian

I just recently replaced the main shaft of my t-case. I used this snap ring pliers. They are adjustable for inner or outer snap rings. I think I got them at Napa or autozone (don't remember)
(click pics for larger image) ![]() One little trick I found for putting the snap rings back on the shaft is to cut a small groove on the ends of the snap rings so the pliers will grip the snap ring. This pic doesn't show the groove I made but I cut the groove on the angled end with a dremel tool. ![]() hth, Dave

I have three pairs...the two pair with the small needle tips one that is for inside one for outside..then I have a pair that have the flat tip which you will need. Yes you will need those pilers...sure you can do it w/out it but it will be hard and if you screw up your snap rings your going to be pissed as it will set your project back while you get a replacement. |

Make sure you get some pretty big ones. I bought those little ones pictured above from AutoZone or Sears or something, and I had a helluva time trying to get most of them off.

Be sure, like others have said, to get some decent quality ones. We did this a few weeks ago and only had the lock ring pliers and found out they weren't the best in the world. We got it done but it took some time...and some screwdrivers...

I just did my SYE this weekend...
I used these- http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/skt7636.html They were all I needed. You 'might' need both lock ring AND snap ring pliers depending on what brand of SYE you have. Lock rings have plain ends and snap rings have holes at the ends. I had the Advanced Adapters kit, and did not require snap ring pliers. You may need snap ring pliers IF your kit requires you to install the bearing in the new tailshaft housing. Mine came with the bearing pre-installed. |

Thank you for your help. I ordered the lisle lock ring pliers online today. I have the Teraflex sye kit and the bearings already come in the housing, so does this mean I will not need the snap ring pliers? I don't want to start this job unprepared, it will make it take forever.

Have a look at the parts in your kit. If all you see are lock rings, then you just need the lock ring pliers. The only snap ring I recall seeing was the one that holds the bearing in, and since that one doesn't need to be removed to disassemble the transfer case, you can ignore it.

I ordered both sets of pliers. Now I am concerned after reading the 4x4xplor write up that I may need the drive shaft bolts. I don't see any w/ my kit (Teraflex). I know the write up is for the AA kit, but I don't see these bolts w/ my kit either. They are the bolts that connect the drive shaft to the new yoke on the sye I believe. Anyone know?

Call the vendor where you got the kit I have the same one and it had everything.
