Lock Ring Pliers/ Snap Ring Pliers for SYE

ive been searching high and low all morning for a pair of lock ring pliers and snap pliers that have been effective and have been used on SYE. As I searched through posts it seems that everyone makes it a point that they should have a good set of these when doing this install but no one points out a tried and true set. Links would be great. Thanks in advance

Here is a link to the lock ring pliers I used. They worked great. There was no need for snap ring pliers.

What is your search criteria? I just did a google one for "lock ring pliers" and nearly every link on the first page had a set that would work just fine.

You need a pair with fixed tips, not interchangeable. They need to open a minimum of 2" and have decent length handles for the needed leverage. Cross hatching on the tips to prevent slippage is a plus.

I do know that I mentioned in USMoronLJ's SYE thread that the Craftsman set didn't open wide enough for the big lock ring encountered in a SYE install and that info was probably more important that the rest of the shenanigans involved.

Further, do not buy any snap ring pliers with interchangeable tips. All they do it get your hopes up with their fanciness and dash them with abysmal performance.

Crescent makes some convertible pairs that go from internal to external with a simple swap around of the pivot point, Knipex makes awesome stuff, as do many others. Don't buy cheap crap and you'll be just fine.

A minimum of 2"? The lock rings only have about a 1/2" gap in them. It only takes opening them a little bit and you can slide them right off. The Craftsman lock ring pliers I bought open 1" and work perfect. Why do you need snap ring pliers? There are 2 lock rings involved in disassembly and 3 locks rings involved in reassembly. This is the SYE I installed just a couple of weeks ago:

I bought my snap-ring pliers on one of those roving tool trucks (MAC, Snap-on, Matco etc.) that sell directly to mechanics. I never found any that opened widely enough in a retail store.

This is the set I used and they worked great. They lock when the ring is open so so don't have to hold it open while trying to remove. Good luck.

I don't exactly know what to tell you. I have a set of the craftsmen lock ring pliers and although they did work on the first SYE I did, they were a struggle. Subsequent purchase of wider opening lock ring pliers made life much easier on the next 10 SYE installs I did.

Not every SYE replaces the tailcone and those require the removal of the bearing out of the stock tailcone which is held in with a what?

Thanks for the snap ring info. I remember seeing it in the tailcone.

This is a perfectly timed post for me as I've got the SYE sitting in the garage and am in the market for some snap/lock ring pliers to intsall this AA kit. Any direct links to good pliers appreciated.

I was looking at the same napa ones linked yesterday, so you think those are too much?

Did'nt use them on lock rings, used them on snap rings. They're expensive but it was last minute and I needed a set. Also, like most tools, you get what you pay for.

At the top of this thread I have a link to a pair of Craftsman lock ring pliers(~$15) that works great for an SYE install. If your new AA tailhousing came preassembled with the bearing already installed, you won't need snap ring pliers.
