LJ's and lifts

Well the factory tires are almost worn out and I am looking at lifts to clear some bigger tires. Looking at 33x10.5 and putting them on the Ravine wheels. I am leaning towards the RE 3.5 SF kit and have a question. I read post after post about dropping the transfer case or lifting the motor and body to get rid of vibration, but all the posts were on TJ's. Can any LJ owners give me their experience with this. Is a SYE/new driveshaft going to be necessary? This is a daily driver and will see occasional off road use. I have no plans for anything bigger than 33's and don't want to throw money at mods I may not need.

Thanks.
Jeff

LJ owners do have longer rear driveshafts so it does help in that aspect, but you still may or may not get vibes. Every Jeep is different and you won't know what has to be done until the lift is complete.

I can't help you out too much on that lift, but I can tell you that I was in the same boat. But for the time being, I went with 2" spacers, new shocks, and 32x11.5 At's (needed spacers for the stock echo wheels), and I've had no problems with moderate off-road stuff, and it's great plowing around in the snow. And it still works great as an everyday driver, and tows the motorcycle around at times. Just a suggestion, if you're not sure how much you want to do right now.

I am at the same point, I have an REBB right now and my tires are on the end of there life, along with my brakes but thats another topic. I am going to add a BL 1.25 & MML then i will fit the 33x12.5 i want on my stock moab wheels with spacers.

If you want to stay cheap, spacers and shocks get you there...
My setup is almost the same as his with the exception of a few items...
I have the 2.25" spacer lift with Skyjacker Hydros, extra 0.75" Spacers up front, and 1" Body Lift and 1" Motor Mount Lift.... and Atlas transfer case shifter... I clear 33s on stock Rubis flexed no issue. Steering stops needed adjusting but that was it....

As to vibes, none for me.... If you have a Rubi LJ you only need a CV driveshaft, no SYE if you even need to make a change at all. I did not...

What kind of offroading do you do?
If this is a daily driver that only sees the occasional dirt road, trail, beach, etc, then I would just go spacers and call it a day...

If you are needing lots of articulation for rock crawling and such then real suspension is the way to go....

So.... What are your goals?

Jeff,

I have a 2005 LJ and I installed a RE 3.5" Std. lift last fall. I too was cautious before installing my lift due to the vibrations that some get. Personally, I did not get any vibrations, but was prepared to take the necessary measures to correct if they did occur. If you have an automatic be prepared to either modify or remove your stock transmission skid. Good luck at whatever you decide. LJ's lifted are sweet!

Just to get you a little more excited.

That's the stuff I was looking for Krafty. I don't intend to go rock crawling with this jeep, but it will get used on the trail (it has already seen some black diamond trails) from time to time, so I will be doing a spring lift. I can't tell from the pics, did you have to use a transfer case drop? I want to keep this as simple and obviously as cheep as possible. I'm just looking to see how deep I'm getting into this lift. I don't intend to modify the slip yoke until I need to. Thanks for the info everyone.

Well, I have a '06 LJ that I installed a RE 4.5 lift w/3.5 springs on it. When I ordered it from Jason at Red Rock he told me I would get vibrations without a transfer case drop or SYE installed. He sent me the TC drop with my order and I installed the kit without it. Originally, I made the UCA's 1/4" longer than stock and I did have vibrations. To make a long story short, I ended up installing the TC drop and adjusting the UCA's back to stock length to completely get rid of the vibes. It wasn't what I wanted to do but it will get me by until I can get a SYE installed. You have a Rubi so all you will need is the DS and UCA's. Hope this helps you. JB

You might consider the Old Man Emu lift with a 1" body lift. No need for a transfer case drop and will clear 33's. You want to aviod the transfer case dropm as it defeats part of the reason for the lift. With the LJ high centering can be a problem. So dropping the already in the way belly of the beast just subtracts from your break over angle.

You may try the guys at www.wranglerunlimited.com. Thats all there are overthere and you may get some additional help.

Until today I had the RE 3.5" SF lift and I had it installed with the 1" TC drop. I kept the stock driveline and have not had any vibrations.

I've got a 4" pro comp on mine.. i know what people will say about it, but it was what was on it when i bought it (brand new of course, the dealership had it put on). For pictures, look at my sig.

In the future (probably when i get the jeep payed off), i want to move up to a 5.5" RE LA and 35x13.15x15 toyos and black wheels.. i cant wait until that happens

Nope, I didn't use a T/C drop. No vibs and rides great. If you do get vibs I have been told that you can use a couple washers instead of the T/C drop.

Just so you know I am planning on installing an SYE and BL/MML (which I already have), so that I can TT. If I were to do my lift over again I would have bought the RE 4.5" SF lift with 3.5" springs, you get a whole lot of goodies for a lot less price. That's just something to keep in mind.
