lifter tapping is this common 4.0

I've had two jeeps a 91 with 160000 miles and now a 06 with 48000...both jeeps have had lifter tapping and was just curious if this is a common thing for the 4.0s..I also have a few friends with same engines and tap tap taparoo...also my jeeps are well maintained so its not like I'm neglecting oil changes or nething

I've had a '94 and now a '00, and those as well as most I've been around have some lifter noise. It may be due to the flat tappet cams used in our jeeps, as well as the thin sheetmetal valve covers. It's just one of those Jeep things. You could spend some money on a fancy aftermarket aluminum valve cover to quiet it down a bit, but I wouldn't worry about it.

Mine is 2001 TJ sport with 140K miles. No tapping. And I bought the jeep used when it was 120K. I use regular dino oil 10W-30.

My 02 had a tap that would come and go. I thought it was a lifter. It was the Oil Pump Drive Shaft. It's bushings wallered out and the shaft was slapping around inside the housing.

I own a 99 with 100k that doesnt have any lifter noise or tapping and my brother owns a 2000 with 140k that does have a bit of lifter noise, he's been driving it for about 20,000 miles now and hasn't had any problems. I guess its kind of a jeep thing.
