My buddy was getting a lift installation quote on his tj and the store wanted $1100 just for the install not counting the lift price. Seems really outrageous to me. Whats the going rate in Ohio?
Again, it really depends on the kit. Is it a suspension lift? Long Arm? Short Arm? Body? What kit? A full long arm kit with weld on rear truss etc.. could go beyond $1,100 for labor.
If he is looking at a short arm kit than that sounds high to me. If it is just labor for installing springs and shocks, that is way way more than it should be.
Does your friend have access to tools? Can he do it himself?
Why not install it yourself and use the money you save to buy a winch or???
A short arm lift is pretty easy and could be done in your drive way on a weekend (or two - if your slow like me) with basic tools.
Mine cost a few 6 packs of Sam Adams, buns, and burgers. But boy did I make out haha I met a bunch of great individuals who I have wheeled with now, and all the information i could absorb in a day heh.
x2 -- Before I put my lift on, I offered help on local Jeeps for free just to gain the knowledge....in fact, I still do that. When I felt confident, got some friends together, and just did it. It wasnt really that hard, and made some really good friends in the process.
If, as a last resort, you still have a garage put the lift on, I would say that $1100 is too high for a SA kit without the SYE.
Best advice given. Search for some offroading clubs. Most people will be happy to spend a weekend getting dirty with some random strangers as long as wrenches, beer and pizza is involved.
